'32-'34 Ford Hot Rod Race...all using a common frame...

Hey Guys,

I'm just looking for input...I'm thinking about putting together a One-shot race, maybe in conjunction with the last race of the Bare Muscle 3 Series. And what I'm thinking of is having an open-fendered Hot Rod race, with all cars using the '34 Ford/Dumpin' A/Paddy Wagon frame (I think they are all the same, aren't they, Smitty?)....57 grams...Bodies have to be '32 - '34 Fords (there are a bunch of them)...ftes

With all the cars using the same frame, it should keep the racing close...and the Hot Rods could go up against the Bare Muscle Cars...a Summer Nationals kind of deal!

I know that Smitty will up for it...who else would be interested?

Let me know!

These are good candidates for this race. Smitty has probably built a couple hundred of these...and quite a few full scale ones. But, I'll do a little build-up using these, jyst to show you how cool these can be...

This is the chassis I'd like to use for this race...

It is a very simple frame, which makes the customizing very straightforward...just like the real thing!

And, here is what the underside of this '34 Ford looks like...

As you can see, it is a 'Highjacker' model, which are a little trickier to make racers out of, so the chassis swap makes good sense.

And remember, there are a bunch of bodies that will work on this chassis...maybe Smitty can give you a complete list...and I'm sure I can twist his are and get him to do a build up in this thread too!

This is how I like to support my cars when I drill them...this is vice with plastic on the jaws...

Please use eye protection when drilling your rivets and go slowly...drill just deep enough to free the body from the chassis...

I just talked to Smitty, and he had a good suggestion for the race. The '34 Chassis is a little easier to customize, so it makes sense make that chassis part of this as well. I think Smitty might do a build up on the '34 chassis and I'll continue with the 'Dumpin' A' chassis.

So, if you want, either of the above chassis can be used!

These are the main components tgat I'll be using for my build...

The '34 body, the Dumpin' A chassis, and, for now, the Dumpin' A grill and engine...the engine will get swapped out.

As you can see, the holes don't line up...

So, I have two choices, I can drill another hole to allow the body post to drop down, or I can grind down the post. I'll be drilling a hole in the chassis...it will make for a stronger connection.

More on that in a bit

A new hole drilled in the chassis for the body post...

And now the body is almost sitting right...

I need to grind a little away from the reenforcing material of the original hole in the chassis and then, the body should sit down where it belongs. I'll work on that tonight.

  • Nah, it will be easy to grind a little off the chassis :) — 72_Chevy_C10

Last night, I did a little paint stripping...this is what I used...

And it did a pretty good job...

I'm not sure how well you can see this, but I ground a little material away so the body post can sit down in the hole all the way

And I opened up the axle hold downs, so I can get the new axles in there...

This doesn't look like much, but I had to narrow the bottom of the engine a little to get it to fit between the frame rails..

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w407/critterwerks/20160304_100918_zpspamaqpxi.jpg

That is, if I decide to keep.this engine in it

And, as you can see, the body is now sitting nicely 'channeled' down over the Dumpin' A chassis..

If I were running small front wheels, I could leave the stock front bumper alone, but I'll be using the medium sized wheels. So, I'll have to straighten it out a bit to clear the wheels

And here it is, mocked up...

Weight will have to be added and those are jyst stand-in wheels. I'll show more of this car a little closer to the race.

Now, it's Smitty's turn to show you how it's done! And I'll have to twist Traction Event's arm to get him to do a build up as well!
