Anchoring axles with JB Quick

model40fan Tuesday, 9/16/2014

THIS MAY BE A REPEAT, BUT WITH DELTA HAVING BOTH AXLES LET GO I FIGURE WHY NOT...

METAL AND PLASTIC BASES WILL HAVE MOLD RELEASE SPRAYED INTO THE MOLD THUS ONTO THEM,  DRILL A 1/16" HOLE BETWEEN THE WHEELS LEFT TO RIGHT, [DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT] ...

PRE-FIT BOTH AXLES TO BE SURE THEIR IS CLEARANCE...

  DEBURR THE UNDERSIDE OF THE JB HOLE WITH A LARGER DRILL BIT IN YOUR FINGERS, THIS COUNTERSINK BECOMES THE HEAD OF THE J B RIVET WHEN IT HAS SET UP...

CLEAR OUT THE AXLE SLOT WITH A SMALL FILE...

PUSH SOME JB "UP" INTO THE JB HOLE WITH A TOOTHPICK FROM BELOW...

TAPE OVER THE JB, THAT WILL HOLD IT THERE WHEN YOU FLIP THE BASE OVER...[DRIPS]

ON TOP I LIKE A BB SIZE BALL OF J B QUICK, CONNECTED TO THE JB FROM UNDERNEATH, PLACED INTO THE CENTER OF THE AXLE SLOT...

 SET YOUR NEW AXLE INTO THE BB, MAKE SURE THE AXLE IS WHERE IT SHOULD BE..

SPIN THE AXLE A BIT, IT WILL LET THE JB FLOW OVER IT...

SPACE THE WHEELS EVENLY FROM THE BASE.. CARDSTOCK SHIMS IF NEEDED...

TOP SIDE ;

BOTTOM SIDE ;

LEAVE A DAB OF JB ON THE MIXING CARD, USE IT TO TEST SET UP RATE...

WHEN IT STARTS TO SET UP REMOVE THE SHIMS, FLIP THE CAR UPSIDE DOWN, RE-SPACE THE WHEELS...

AFTER JUST A LITTLE MORE SET UP,  AND TEST ROLL [UPSIDEDOWN] FOR ALIGNMENT...

BY GENTLY PRESSING ONE WHEEL BACK AND ONE WHEEL FORWARD YOU CAN ALIGN IT UPSIDEDOWN, CHECK SPACING...

LET CURE... FLIP RIGHTSIDE UP AND TEST ROLL FOR ALIGNMENT...

YOU CAN GENTLY BEND A WHEEL BACK AND THE OTHER FORWARD TO FINE TUNE IT...

IF YOU WANT TO REUSE THE AXLES, GENTLY DRILL OUT THE JB RIVET FROM THE BOTTOM...WITH A SMALL KNIFE PRY THE JB FROM THE BASE, DO NOT PRY ON THE AXLE...

HAD TO USE ALL SMALL WHEELS TO CLEAR THE 1.30" GAUGE...

When you JB the axles do you just put it in the center of the axle?  I was thinking about also putting some JB near the ends of the axle?

original release redlines had independent suspension... jb quicking the center lets the rest of the axle work as suspension... used on the ends makes the car rigid... causing some problems with coming out of the transfer...

if the suspension was not needed then WH would have anchored the axles out near the axle's ends... $0.02

  • yes, and keeping it in the center minimizes the risk of it wicking near the wheel...and gumming up the works — Traction-Event
  • I like to use a good amount of JB Weld on the axles...especially for the heavier cars — 72_Chevy_C10
