Displaying cars...
Hey Guys,
I have a 'non-racing' question...how do you display your cars. I'd love to find an old spinner rack and use that...the local grocery store has a Matchbox spinner display when I was a kid that would be cool.
I also like this style if display...

But they are kinda pricey ($200!!). I'm thinking that there is about $30-40 worth of materials there...I might have to make one!
I'd be interested in seeing other...cheaper...options.
Thanks Guys!

Sometimes you can find old print shop trays at a good price. Depending on what blocks they were holding, you might be able to get good ones for cars.
I've actually come up with a solution for this...I'll do a build-up. Very simple solution for what I need to do :)

Shelf unit (or bookcase) is the door to the other side of the basement. Always wanted a secret door. Oops, secret's out.

What you see hear is a 12" x 48" shelf that I had laying around. I think I grabbed it when they did some remodeling here at work...

And what you see here is that same shelf with 25 grooves cut in it...

A detail on the grooves...they are about 5/16" deep and the groove is about .100" across...

I'll have more on this as it progresses. I'm off from work the week between Christmas and New Years, so I might be able to get it together then :)
Here's the next installment! I made these disks that will fit in the grooves that I cut...

And they will slide into the groove on the under side of orange track...

And, for my "proof of concept" they seem to work really well...

I have some molding the I will put around the outside. And I will probably paint it black. The disks will be cast the dark purple color of the old connectors and I will cut up some old track to makes the shelves for the cars. I'll have $20-30 wrapped up in it and it will hold between 75 and 100 cars (depending if I go 3 or 4 cars per shelf).
I'll put up more pics as it progresses :)

note ; a couple of the disc / tab units the our resident magician [c10] is making could be rotated 90* and could anchor the ends of orange track and transfer ...
go chris go !
Thanks Smitty! I hadn't thought about using them for transfer connectors. I'm going to try to come up with a Drag Track section the transfers really smoothly to the orange/fat track...maybe a 4-6" section. We'll see what works best.
P.S. first TE calls me 'Wonderboy' and now Smitty says I'm the 'local magician'...I must be doing something right around here!
An old rotating glass watch display case I found in the basement of an antique store.

I have a shelf sorta like the one in the photo...my grandpa made mine for me back when I was a kid. He just took some extra wood, paneling and put it together. He cleaned up and stained it, nice and solid - my kid has it now for her cars and toys.
But yeah...materials are pretty affordable, just time and tools add the real cost.
