Site update: New event options for topics, race calendar

Thursday night saw the first major release update to the site that included new event features and a racing calendar. Other minor changes and fixes were also included.

Add dates to your topic

When you edit a topic, you will now see a link giving you the option to add event details to your post - date, time, location, etc.

You should use these options when you're posting about any type of racing event, like mail-in tournaments, club meetings, charity events, local events...anything that involves diecast racing is a good candidate.

Once your topic is saved with event details it will be reviewed, approved and then added to the overall racing calendar. I'm hoping the approval process is only temporary while we all get used to having this feature available. As we all get used to it and I see that people are using it correctly, I'll turn off the screening and things will be added to the calendar immediately.

NOTE: This approval process does NOT limit your post being seen by others or their ability to submit replies. The approval only applies to calendar, nothing more.

When your event topic gets approved, it will be added to the race calendar and have the event details added to the top of your post.

I have gone back and added event details to some of the existing topics about mail-in tournaments and other events, so you will see the end result in a few places. It's nothing real significant but hopefully it will add some "officialness" to our events and make dates and deadlines more clear.

I'll be reaching out to diecast clubs telling them about this feature and that they are welcome to use it to promote their own race events. If you're in a club or help organize diecast racing, please mention this feature to them and have them sign-up. I know there are racing events happening everywhere and I'd like to see Redline Derby be a hub for those looking to get involved in racing both near and far.

Racing calendar

To complement the new event options, a separate racing calendar has been added that lists out all the dates. Nothing too fancy but should hopefully give people an overall schedule of events.

Better image and YouTube posting

This recent update also included some things that should handle adding images and YouTube videos to your posts a little easier. There are no new steps to learn, things should just display better. I did as much testing as I could but if you find yourself having problems or things not doing what you expect, please PM me or submit a bug.

As usual, your feedback is appreciate and if you have any problems or questions, please speak up and I'll tackle things as quickly as possible.

And up next on my list to work on is an update member dashboard that will give you better stats and updates about your topics and posts, including Thumbs Up updates. This should be a pretty quick turnaround and then I'll start work on the next new feature, the Trophy Room. After that, the long road to the Fantasy League update begins.

Digging the updates...race calendar is a great addition. Easy to find the latest events.

When I start a race thread for the hauler series, will that thead super cede the old one?
