Trying out new video layout, need feedback

So I got some new editing software and am trying it out for the Red Ball Rally results. Took me a while just to get to this 5-second clip...sheesh. But let me know how you like the layout because I'd be using the same template for every race.

Music is temporary, just trying to see how big files are with music.

Let me know what you think. If the layout is too busy or confusing or just doesn't look good you, let me know before I dump a ton of time into doing it for every race. Still at the "what if" stage so I can change things easily right now.

Would it be better to have a hard cut between the wide shot and finish line, rather than the picture-in-picture thing? Given the cars go so fast, I think the flashing between shots is harder to watch.

The Red Ball series is all 2-camera but maybe just one is plenty? Thing is my camera has to be fixed, so tracking the cars isn't really an option. But I feel a wide shot that shows the whole track doesn't help much because the cars are too tiny to get any information from it.

Just brainstorming...

I don't mind the split screen and I like how you have it captioned on the bottom. But, you might want to slow the action down a little (meaning use slow-motion) and move the camera a little closer to the finish.

What is fun about these races is how close the finishes are...and with the slo-mo, you can really see it.

Or, maybe show real-time speed coming off the hill and just slow down the finish?

Looking good, Brian!

I made a pvc unit that stratels the track, I intend to film from the transfer towards the finish... with a short 80" track and if I can figure out slo-mo should show the finish and instant elapsed times on the wizard...

flipper should be here Friday !

I too like the split screen, but I would like a top or closer view of the cars at the finish. Don't get me wrong this is fantastic work. But you asked so...  I really like to see the difference between the cars on the big end of the track.

I love the captioning, but I would like to see the finish lane camera positioned more above the finish line and at a bit of an angle, like the shot you see on an NHRA race's finish line on TV. And maybe only write the winner of the match on the captioning after the run is over, if that is possible.

Great feedback, thanks...keep it coming :)

I too like the finish line moments but I also really like seeing "come from behind" moments when a car has the drop and first stretch but then gets passed. The finish line tell you who won and how close, but the rest of the track tells the story...but I agree that the wide shot makes everything way to small. Even if the story is there, it's very fine print.

I'll try some different angles for the Truck O Rama race in a couple weeks and see how that goes.

As far as slow-mo goes, I find the artificial slow-mo to be pretty poor. And that has nothing to do with who's shooting or editing the video, it's the fault of the software. Slowing down video doesn't remove blur or anything that makes it more interesting, for that you need a high speed camera. Although I think the new iPhones have a slow-mo feature but I don't have one to try.
