Introduction: After approx. 8 years of viewing, 7 years of competing overseas, (and open track here) over that time I have only seen myself and my Kiwi mate Mike of EnZed Racing continually stepping up to the challengeod diecast drag racing and open track racing!
There has been no hardcore timed drag racing at all downunder, though there have been some really great open track channels. Ie Hot Car Track, Thunder Valley, and Bathurst Diecast Racing.
Over the last year, months, I have seen more messages comments etc attributed to local diecasters (not racing) to me. There is no Pinewood Derby scene here like in the States, where it is far easier and less costly to get information and products to find the speed required. Many locals I suspect, find it intimidating, to pay the costs to send a car overseas, the entry fee, then have two runs down a track, have their ass kicked, and eliminated in Round 1. Then probably can’t justify the high return cost, and learn nothing, other than requiring a beer to numb the pain of a sore behind and shattered ego!
So, I have decided to run, well I guess an “Introductory” event for Australians and NZers only. The event will be published here, and on fb, to try to reach into the wider community. (I will run a full blown event later this year for all.) Please pass on to any Aussies or Kiwis Diecasters!
Aim: To encourage Aussies & Kiwis, who may already have large collections of dusty Diecast, ie Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Majorette, etc to get into, well hopefully eventually kickstart a local diecast race scene, which in turn could benefit the whole community of diecast racing.
Also to give new, and old, an opportunity to gauge / benchmark where their cars speed is at. Also if entrants would like some feedback either open or in private, I will do my best to guide them where to look for answers, etc. I will reference what times would make one competitive for that car in the US. As host, I will not be competing in the event.
I have listened to community input and combined it with my own experiences. The main features of this event, to try and promote the hobby will be in the following headings. But, the main features to promote this hobby/sport downunder include:
No Entry Fees.
Cars returned via request at postal cost (by owner)
Each entered vehicle will complete at least 9 timed runs.
Small Trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Cerificates for 4th and 5th.
An FTE Award Trophy. (Fastest Time of the Event)
Note: History of FTE: In Australian Car Club Sprint Days, the objective is to record the FTD (Fastest Time of the Day) which simulates race qualifying sessions. I place a high regard to the driver who achieves that award, I also feel the same about the diecast builder who achieves the FTE, the Fastest Time of the Event, so I wish to replicate that achievement with an award.

Note:. If entrants wish to send over an experimental mod car or two to have benchmarked, I am open to do that, however, it would be carried out separately to the event. It could either be public or private video, or just results, upon discussion.

Race format and scoring

Format:
The event is held on a 3-lane track. Each round will consist of 3 timed runs, 1 in each lane.
The First Round will be a random bracket, however, where possible, no entrant will face their own car. Every race will have 3 cars competing at once. The host, if required, will only use “Rip and Race” Hi Roller 2s to fill any gaps. They will not be eligible for any final.
The Second Round will be laddered, based off the results of Rd1. Ie The 3 Highest Scoring cars, in bracket 1, then 4th 5th, 6th Highest Scoring cars in Bracket 2 etc.
The Third Round will again be laddered, using the results of the Second Round.
The Finals Round will consist of the Major Final, using the 3 Highest Scoring cars from Round 3. There will also be a Minor Final using the 4th, 5th, 6th Highest scoring cars from Round 3.
Scoring: In each round the three cars run three timed runs. The fastest TWO timed runs will be added together, then averaged. Results are based on these averages. In the event the averages are identical, the third time shall be used to determine the placings.
The Major Final will determine who places 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the event.
The Minor final will determine who places 4th, 5th and 6th for the event.
FTE Award (Fastest Time of the Event) This award is based on the fastest single run recorded at any stage during this event.

Penalties/DNF

The approx ave weight of a stock Hi Roller 2 is 35.7gm
The approx ave weight of a stock Hako Type D is 33.8gm
Upon inspection there is to be no added weight other than paint, decals, lube.
Any vehicles that are outside of the nominal max weight should be discussed, prior to sending. Hosts decision is final.

If a car fails to meet any of the rules listed, the car will not race in the main event or qualify for any prizes.. Offending cars will still race separately in a shortened program.

Cars that fail to run, or that happen to break during racing, will forfeit their matches. Cars that arrive broken will not race. Cars that break during racing will not be repaired or replaced.

Hosts Decision is final.

Prizes

Prizes: Small trophies for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and FTE. Small certificates for 4th and 5th.

As you are aware, Lando is a large percentage Australian Cattle Dog: Australian Shepherd. Dan he send a car??

jk but good luck in hosting and to everyone entering

  • I'd be happy to vote Yes on allowing Lando to send a "large percentage" of a car to race. At least 75% of one ;-) — EnZedRacing
  • Hi RLo, you will like this. With all the things over the last few months decided to find a dog to rehome. Well am looking. Found a dog will will see Wednesday. The lady said, oh we have another but the site would only allow me to advertise the one dog.....Haha, The dogs name.... Arlo ! — CutRock_R_Marc_D

Great idea Marc!!

Put me down for a couple and I'll get hold of some track owners here in NZ to pull finger and join in the fun.

  • Thanks Mike. Yeah pass it on to any fence sitters around down here! Have to try and get things rolling! I will hit up a couple of the local "Collectors" fb pages — CutRock_R_Marc_D

I found a collector nearby who will send a car to race in this. ToeTag Racing, his first ever event. Another kiwi to try his luck at drag racing

A noble community service. I'd love to see the hobby grow.

  • Much appreciated Variat! You too have been a long time stalwart on diecast racing. Yeah, it has been a lonely "fight" from Aus in diecast racing. Hell we have had some great open tracks, but never really cracked any to challenge themselves racing. I have a few ideas to promote, well try to, the hobby down here. This is a start, I will do a few more general "Comment Promotions" and ask on a few "local collectors forums" if I can put it out there, that there is more to diecast, than just dust collecting! Many thanks for the comment. — CutRock_R_Marc_D
  • Are there beloved casting more specific to NZ and Astralia? — VariatSkunkWorks
  • Well the "collectors" here, anything Aussie (Holden (GM) Ford (Australia) Chrysler (Dodge) or that has been on our roads is popular. Until recently, very few hot wheels castings. I recall about 4 years or so ago Majorette Australasia openly asked for feedback on what casting (new) would you like to see? I detailed several historic castings, they gave me feedback, yeah... Didn't happen, but now Oz Wheels has come along and is killing the market, with exactly what I suggested to Majorette. Sadly the Oz Wheels as a stock rolling car.....have crap quality wheels and can only be for mods, but then the castings generally have too short a track, and wheel base. Cheers — CutRock_R_Marc_D

Still plenty of time to enter!

Enzed Racing has arrived safely. Thanks for the note and the overly generous gifts. Much appreciated! I shall do a mail in vid shortly. However, I will not be opening the Event Cars till the deadline, so all are aired at the one time.

Hopefully in the meantime I will try and attract a few more in.

Cheers all. Marc D
