In racing its fine and fair to look through the rules for any advantage you can get over the competition.  The hosts make the rules for their track and their races. Dry lube only seems pretty clear. Are we going to have A-Group racing, B-Group racing, C-Group Anything Goes racing?

  • Hi AbbyNormal! I've brought up the idea of racing classes a la WEC/IMSA. I think clearly defined classes with simple rules could be an asset to diecast racing, but like any ruleset, it would have to be agreed upon by racers and race organizers/track owners. The hobby is large enough that united ratification of any rules package would be impossible unfortunately. — Benjamin_37
  • I believe they are talking about following rules more so then racing classes — GBURacing
  • agreed — dr_dodge

Wow! I have been experimenting as well! I have came up with my own way to lube cars and I got a little faster. Some racers in here are impressed of how I got fast so quick as a rookie! I know it takes hard work to get there! You are still the best of the best and will always will be! THANK YOU!

Hi Blue Line! Thank you for the tips. I've been getting help from Koots at Bent Rod Racing with cars & equipment for modding. Where would I be able to pick these things up? If they are available from Walmart,  that will make it easy to get. I look forward to trying this on a Cadillac GTP. I hear those are fast already,  but need a smooth track because they are so low. I would also like your input on aerodynamic development with the advent of desktop wind tunnels. It's all about going fast downhill,  right?

  • Max V and Derby Dad have their own website. I buy Silicone on Amazon but most hardware stores should have it also. I’m sure wind tunnels have their place. I know some have used them but I have not. Every little bit does count though. — BlueLineRacing

BLR thanks so much for the great insight. So if host post "Dry Lube Only" is it a definite rule, suggestion or as long as a liquid doesn't drip on the track?

  • I guess that is a question for the individual host. You’re not seeing that rule very much anymore but I would ask what the definition of dry lube is. Silicone may or may not be dry lube. It also matters if they are going to enforce the rule or not. — BlueLineRacing
  • I always suggest to people, if in doubt, ask the event organiser. Sometimes organisers just copy n paste rules, and I think sometimes dont know what they have put in place. As there is no "governing body" the event organiser can interpret rules and whether to, or not enforce some rules. I have seen this going back years. I recall my strict interpretation of the rules, where I had to build a car with a "stock chassis" only to see a lead car upside down and saw the Bride of Frankenstein. (Still have pics of it) But no one called it out, or policed it. I guess the builder was of such high standing, no one wanted to call it out. BUT, over time one sees who runs events in fair and proper manners and are very open to having rules questioned. Cheers good luck out there! — CutRock_R_Marc_D
  • To me, silicon dries after a day or two, so that would classify as DRY LUBE... I think it's when the 3n1 oil is dripping off the wheels that the host get a bit annoyed. — EnZedRacing
  • Yes Enzed, indeed some even list dry lube on the can as well. So many different interpretations. Cheers mate. — CutRock_R_Marc_D

Dude, that's awesome! Looks like I'll be spending more time experimenting!

  • "Give it time......It will Dry out!" Cheers ! — CutRock_R_Marc_D
  • That’s funny — alva1370
  • The car was a junker with bent wheels I was about to drill, anyway, so ..... — SpyDude
  • In my head I have a graphite concoction, heated to 150 and put into an ultrasonic cleaner for 10 minutes. — alva1370
  • My head is spinning from all these ideas. — alva1370

I remember when I first started racing. Like most of us, it was after watching a 3D Botmaker race. I remember scrolling on YouTube and finding the scale racing channel and blue line racing and red pill. Racing .... Truly, my first heroes of die cast racing. Mainly because they drag race.... A lot of my influence comes from these 3 racers, among others. All 3 have helped me tremendously to become what elevation die cast racing is today. Even with this information on tap, it is still going to be fun to see how these tournaments play out in the weeks and months to come. Love him or hate him. He's been, the champion of die cast for 2 years running. My hats off to blue line racing, and for all that he has done for this hobby. I appreciate all the tidbits that I have gotten over the years. I definitely hope to still see you on the track.

  • I appreciate all the kind words but what is really appreciate is you and everyone in that FB chat group to come on here and tell everyone how you don’t use graphite either and haven’t for a long time. — BlueLineRacing

Ok, I've read this entire thread a few times now over the last couple days and have mixed thoughts on it.

First off, thank you to Blueline for explaining why your cars are so fast. I appreciate the time and dedication you've put into racing. Like many, I've always been trying to figure out how you did it. Continuously monkeying with my cars - am I not polishing something right? Did I miss a step somewhere that I'm unaware of? Which bring me to my next part.

Most of the races I've been in have had the rule of Dry Lube Only, so I stayed away from oil and grease (while figuring sprays were ok as long as the end result was dry). I experimented with different mixtures of dry lubes to wring that extra thousandth of a second, and while not winning, started to at least place higher and was feeling I was on the right track. Instead I now feel like a bit of a chump because I figured everyone else was using dry lubes. It's even more galling when Blueline makes posts about "lazy whiners". I put the time I am able to into my hobby and having someone say I'm lazy because I'm not bending the rules out of shape is a bit much. It makes me question why I bothered following the rules as posted. Worse, it makes me wonder if I should continue, which pisses me off a little.

  • Agreed, I feel foolish, and betrayed, especially after the agruement I had with BLR over hosts repowdering cars on long seasons, and the whole time him knowing, and not even coming clean then. (I better be quiet again now) — dr_dodge
  • I remember that argument. At the time I chalked it up to him not wanting to throw a mixture out of balance, not that it would gunk up his oil. — StrayDog
  • Dude... you frikin nailed it! — Stoopid_Fish_Racing
  • ...some asterisks seem to be in order??? — GBURacing
  • You pretty much covered it all dog. — AbbyNormal
  • The races I entered allowed it all. You can feel betrayed , you can whine and cry or you can go out and find the next best thing. Some people in this hobby feel so entitled. You think anyone ever gave me all of this info? Say thank you and go win a race. You were betrayed. You betrayed yourself. Life isn’t fair. Make your own luck. — BlueLineRacing
  • I've been in races with you that were Dry Lube Only, so you saying the races you were in allowed it all is demonstrably false. And again you're back to the "whining and crying" defense. If you need that defense to morally justify that you seriously bent the rules as written (if not outright cheating) then go ahead if that makes you feel better. I'm not entitled, and I am not looking for someone to "give me the answers". I'm looking for people to follow the rules of a particular event; you clearly feel differently about following those same rules. — StrayDog
  • And what I’m trying to tell you is you’ve been in these races with 20 others who have their own definition of what “dry lube” is and most hosts allow it. So why not be greatful I told you something nobody else is willing to tell you and use it to your advantage. By the way, were you in KOTM? My car was all graphite for that race. I finished first. This is doesn’t make you a top racer this just gives you information to make a choice. It’s up to you what you do with it. — BlueLineRacing
  • It's wild defending using oil in a dry lube only event. Oil is never considered a dry lube. — johnson9195

Sad day for me
reminds me of this:

MLB,

www.sbnation.com/2010/8/6/1606733/all-time-home-run-list-career-steroids-baseball-asterisk-peds

does the hobby/sport be knocked into rip it opens?

change the podium stats?

or do we just carry on?

dr

  • I thought the exact same thing, and I'm pretty much a bystander here. — GBURacing
  • me too, — dr_dodge
  • Also, just from perusing the Events...don't most Host chrage $5 per car to even race??? — GBURacing
  • You just called 80 percent of the hobby cheaters. Nobody was using graphite for over a year. Wake up — BlueLineRacing
  • We carry on, maybe some asterisks. It's things like this that can damage peoples' enthuiasm in a hobby/ sport. — StrayDog

Wow, valuable information. Thanks! Tbf I never thought BLR of all the builders would be sharing secrets, lol. You could have made a career out of being a "ghost builder," lol. Thanks for sharing, I knew there was a lot more going on with the fast guys after the usual mods. I'm going to give your suggestions a shot and see what the future brings. Cheers!

First off, Tim what an amazing read!! Not from the Wizard of Oz, but the Magus of Momentum here

Second, my gratitude for your transparent candor and meticulous thoroughness explaining your process along with the deep investment in time & resources

Third, you really kicked over an anthill and sparked a needed convo, as marked by so many lengthy replies and subheaded replies

  • Well, I have to say that this was billed as the adult racing channel. Guess we’ll have to see how that all works out. — AbbyNormal

Thanks for the secret formula, now we have to kill you. Don't get discouraged. They're sore losers. it has nothing to do with the cars. We know you're juicing you lying *&#$! Thank you for sharing this, I am still in the graphite powder stage. The fact you shared this info proves to me you won those races fair and square.

But don't stop racing, this is a great community.

  • Haha, reading Tim's post felt like being inside a SCIF!! "Guys, I dunno if I have the clearance for all this" — Chris_Hood
  • And you still can’t make the mob happy. Lol — BlueLineRacing
