"Welcome to the Hot Wheels Metrics Lab Raceway! November 15th, we're bringing data-driven racing to the mail-in tournament scene. Send in your cars, and we'll race them on a six-lane track with automatic start gates and precision timing to the thousandth of a second. Every car gets a personal performance report with its own stats: weight, consistency, average finishing position, win rate, personal best and worst times, consistency score, scaled real-world speed, lane bias, acceleration, relative position change, upset risk ratio, and more. Every race is broadcast on our YouTube channel at @hotwheelsmetrics so you can watch the action live and see how your car performs against the competition. Baseline data, predictions, and real-world scaled speed analysis included in every video. Entry fee: $5 per car. Return shipping fee: $10. First through third place finishers receive a trophy."

Track

The Hot Wheels Metrics Lab Raceway features the Hot Wheels Super 6-Lane Raceway extended to 11 feet in total length, providing ample distance for accurate performance measurement. The track is 11 inches wide with six parallel lanes, allowing simultaneous racing of six cars. The raceway is positioned at a downward angle from start to finish, utilizing gravity to propel vehicles down the track at consistent speeds. Paired with the Play Robotics 6-Lane Timing System, the setup includes an automatic servo-motor start gate that releases all six cars simultaneously, six individual lane sensors, six display screens showing real-time results, and precision timing accurate to the thousandth of a second. This combination delivers tournament-grade data collection for competitive diecast racing.

Race format and scoring

The Hot Wheels Metrics Lab Raceway tournament utilizes a two-phase format designed to maximize data collection and competitive fairness.

**Phase 1: Round-Robin Heats**
Entrants are divided into groups of six cars each. Each group completes multiple heats, with every car racing multiple times to establish baseline performance data. All race times, lane positions, and performance metrics are logged for analysis.

**Phase 2: Double-Elimination Bracket**
Seeding for the double-elimination bracket is determined by overall average heat time across all round-robin races. Cars with the fastest average times receive top seeding. The double-elimination format ensures every car races until eliminated (or wins the championship), providing additional data points and competitive opportunities.

**Data Collection**
All performance data from both the round-robin heats and the double-elimination bracket is compiled into individual PDF reports for each entrant, including weight, consistency, average finishing position, win rate, personal best and worst times, consistency score, scaled real-world speed, lane bias, acceleration, relative position change, and upset risk ratio.
Bracket seeding will be random.

Penalties/DNF

Cars are given a grace of 1g over the stated weight limit to account for variance in scales.

If a car fails to meet any of the restrictions listed above, the car will not qualify for victory. Offending cars will still race. Finish position and any prize will go to the runner-up in the case of the penalty car winning.

Cars that fail to run or fit on the track, or that happen to break during racing, will forfeit their matches. Cars that arrive broken will attempt to be minimally repaired before the racing begins. Cars that break during racing will not be repaired or replaced.

Here's sample picture examples of the track in use and hypothetical report based on made up raw data. Still a work in progress but the complete and comprehensive report, with several more converted and derived statistics, will be published on this forum following the event.

Here's the URL to the full sample report (work in progress):

  • 100% human here! Just a need crunching numbers and trying something novel that other races tracks aren't doing from what I can see. Sorry for any confusion or tension, that was not my intention. Full disclosure: I am utilizing Claude AI for data analysis since it would otherwise be too time consuming. Any ideas or recommendations are greatly appreciated and hope to see you whips come race day : ) — GregFoster
