What is SpectraFlame Paint?
Spectraflame is the name used by Mattel for the metallic finishes sported by their original "Hot Wheels" cars in 1968 through 1972 and also on Many hot wheels ID cars, Ultra Hots and SuperTreasure Hunts. The finish was not the standard paint used on normal cars, but rather a transparent lacquer applied over a polished zinc plated casting. Also known as “Candy” Paint jobs.

Discussion
In, please. Custom.
I'm in.
Looks like we have to pick so I'll do a Spectraflame Evo custom as my first choice
- NO RESUME — epvideos_diecast_racing
- It’s getting better — BlueLineRacing
- Oh shit. Now I need to come up with an Evo killer. And not only that, but a BlueLine Evo killer. Pretty much an impossible task, but I'll do my best. — Numbskull
- Oh, I see! You wiped up my track with a record and now you want that EVO back for this event (snicker, snicker). Tell you what, Timmy-boy, if you forfeit your "upcoming" win in the Ultimate EVO tournament to Speedball and pay me $100, I'll ship your car back. (I get a kick out of being snarky to quote my wife) — GravityThrottleRacing
- Thanks for the offer but I got Evos coming out of my ears and they’re all fast — BlueLineRacing
- I didn't doubt that one bit. Tomorrow, you and the rest of the EVOs will get shipped to Darrell A. — GravityThrottleRacing
- Bad news for me. I haven’t seen one of my cars do well there. — BlueLineRacing
- Do you have any VW Beach Bombs though? And I'm talking about the rear-load ones — lacuevadiecastracing
- Blueline....I saw your car on the track at Bay City......I think it was TOO FAST for the track! — Dutch_Clutch_Racing
I'm in for a Custom! Pic will be uploaded once I find the one I want.
I'm in with a custom, I'll make it pretty!
In with custom please!
- This WILL be nice looking! — Dutch_Clutch_Racing
- Thanks! Hoping to find the right car... looking at all the comments and there are some interesting points about car length and wheel exposure. — Stoopid_Fish_Racing
I'd like to get in with a custom!
I'll be in with a stock one.
- I like it a lot :) — epvideos_diecast_racing
- That is sweet! — GravityThrottleRacing
- Very cool, love the color! — G_ForceRacing
I'd like to enter please. I don't have a lot of confidence in my painting skills, so can I use this Honda Civic si Ultra Hots?
- Yes This qualifies! — epvideos_diecast_racing
- Awesome! That’ll be my ride. — Dog_Squab_Racing
- Half the fun is just giving it a shot and see where it takes you... no one here will give you any grief for trying! — Stoopid_Fish_Racing
Put me in
Lone Star is in for a stock painted ride.
- Sexy — epvideos_diecast_racing
- Always had a soft spot for this AMC! Great version, and the metal base is such a plus! — Chris_Hood
A question for clarity's sake, if a racer stripped the tampos from an Ultra Hot model already claimed by another and added their own water slide decals to make the look distinctive enough, would that be OK on a case by case basis?
- Sure! That would be fine — epvideos_diecast_racing
- Tampos,you mean decals? — G_ForceRacing
- G_ForceRacing, tampos is what Mattel puts on a car, decals is what a racer would put on after painting. Now, is it "dee-kals" or "deck-els"? — Chris_Hood
- how can these tampos be taken off? — G_ForceRacing
- G_ForceRacing, tampos are most quickly removed with high acetone content nail polish remover, but be sure to not have any contact with plastic parts or haze/discolouration will result instantly. Dry erase marker is slower, but more forgiving. Apply and let set for 3-5 seconds then wipe off. Repeat as needed. With acetone, apply and wipe off quickly — Chris_Hood
- Chris, thank you!!! I will try that. I really want to mod the Javelin, has a metal chassis. I’m on it, will let ya know the results!! TY!! — G_ForceRacing
- No matter which method, practice first a couple times — Chris_Hood
- For sure, thanks Chris — G_ForceRacing
- Well I jacked the paint on the Javelin lol so I’m going with the Beemer, thx for your help Chris! — G_ForceRacing
Count me in please. This will be awesome. Custom.
