Advice on what to do hosting?

HSLmotorsports Tuesday, 10/1/2024

I've been filming races with my own cars and posting them on YouTube on this channel

www.youtube.com/@nostalgiarushcollectibleto8954/featured

The format is a season-long points battle like the Winston Cup used to be. This is based on how sub4ra, the now-dormant channel where I got my first introduction to Hot Wheels racing and sent my first modified vehicles, structured his events. I have fat track and due to space constraints, can't build elaborate dioramas like a lot of other youtubers. I'd like to host a mail-in but before that I'd like to know how many people are interested and what I can do (besides the obvious ordering of a timer system) to improve on the experience before I jump into hosting.

Discussion

Hello, My two cents is Just to have fun. Seeing your car Race is the Key, Astetics of Scenery is second or down the order a ways. As long as you have a Competive track guys will want to Race. Different Tracks offer Iniviguality and I just don't modify a car for any Track. Each one is done for each Track according to the Design. so having a New track out there is Way cool. Hosting I found it to be a bit overwhelming at the Start but you will find a system that works best for you and your Track.

I have only hosted one Race myself and am now doing the Big Dogs Race with multiple Tracks, A horse of a Different Breed! Comunication is also very important, as long as the guys are in the know as to the flow of the race the all is good. Lots of vids to look up for editing as well as using Random wheel and Racing Grid. My first Race I came up 7 short that didn't make it, So I improvised and grabbed 7 cars to ripout of the Packages to fill slots. Its easy to get discombobulated so Don't rush anything, Keep Calm and Pet you Dog or Kitty! Even just watching other Channels and seeing how they go about doing the Hosting, They are as Indivigual as the Tracks are. Again just having fun is what we all want, Some guys are just Natural at doing the Commentary and you will slide right in with a Program that is comfortable and everyone is Rocking! I have Fun because I have a few nuts and Bolts loose Hence      ( Bent_Rod ) and I think I am funny Sometimes? That I guess is Debatable.

I'm definetly interested in following this thread.  Thanks for sharing.

The focus should be on good racing, meaning a good, fair, solid track and the format (and communication like was mentioned). Everything else should come second. Not comfortable with commentary? Don't bother. Moving pictures and some music will go a long way.

I'd actually say that would be a nice change from some of the racing I see and could be a difference-maker for you. Forgo the fancy production and just show off some great racing on a great track.

I don't have a good pulse on what every channel is doing but offering some sort of Rookie race I think would be a good way to get some attention and get some interesting racing. It's hard to gatekeep but I always enjoyed hosting a rookie race and seeing what people came up with. It was nice seeing new names and not have any idea who would actually win, rather than the usual suspects.

But overall, if you offer it, people will come. I don't think there will be a shortage of people wanting to race if you put together a solid format, share your track beforehand, and just focus on making your event run as smooth as possible. Good luck!

HSL, You mention the season-long points battle, the way NASCAR used to be: that's something I have been trying to figure out for diecast racing. When you spend weeks of preparation: tuning, painting, testing, tuning more; then the expense of mailing the cars, paying for the return shipping; then getting eliminated in the first race.. that is discouraging. It's also difficult to justify running multiple races with a car that obviously needs to be repaired or have tuning done.

I've been thinking about a format where a car is submitted for a season but can be tuned either by the owner of the track or the owner of the car, to try making it competitive for the next race.. or possibly submitting multiple cars, painted the same but with different tuning characteristics so the car owner can specify which car to run or to swap cars if one doesn't perform well in a race. I was thinking of having up to 4 entries allowed, recording a video of the test / qualifying runs with the car owner allowed to choose which car to race after the test / qualifying runs and swap out before the next race is run. I don't know if anyone has tried anything like this for mail-in tournaments but it wouldn't be much different than what some channels already do, racing single cars for qualifying / seeding; except it would be done with all of a single team's cars and giving them a few days to pick their entry or else the track owner gets to choose the best car from each team.

This has the benefit of paying for shipping one time but having the ability to "tune" your car by swapping it instead of doing physical work to the one entry and avoiding constant mailing back and forth. Just figured I'd share in case anyone has other thoughts or experience from trying it before.

  • I like the idea, maybe 3 and a 4th exchange car (the one that ran worst, and sent it back) only get so many swaps total between the 4 cars. — dr_dodge
  • by the way, ever thought of a HW pin ball track? I have ideas...lol — dr_dodge
  • Dr_Dodge, I've been trying to find a place in the arcade for a track along the walls over some of the games. It might be interesting but very difficult to record a good video. I'm thinking more seriously about a smaller, portable track that can be used here or sent to toy shows and conventions where the local diecast collecting club usually brings their 4-lane dragstrip. Some events don't have room for a 30' long drag strip, so making something that can fit on a 3x8 table or two and able to break down for easier transportation would be preferred. I've been tinkering with a few ideas but haven't found one I like enough to build permenantly. — Billys_Midway_Racing
  • space is always an issue...lol I am making my tracks mobile, too — dr_dodge
  • I was thinking about having Thursday night grudge racing. Once a week drag race whatever cars are in the house. — alva1370
  • Actually, with the original sub4ra format, you could have reserved cars and choose to run them at different tracks, and or, get your burnt out car sent back for — CutRock_R_Marc_D

History Intro: Sub4ra Nascar Racing, well this was very popular when I started racing many years ago. A good "grassroots" with not many frills racing, but with great commentary and a season long series of team racing and pointscores. A lot of fun. (I wont go into its disappearance.) Many top racers were into it, incl Red Pill, MDG, FPD, Flip, Po Boy, James Kleman, and more.. One of the issues for many races there, I think was poor track design, leading to more than necessary crashes.

HSL was racing in that series, and has now used what was a successful format, to have some fun and learn the trade of tracks, calling, pointscores, and the biggies, video shooting and editing. Grassroots. Good on you, and happy to support where I can. Great bang for buck raciing where many of us started off from.

So go check it out and give some constructive, positive feedback!

Cheers

Marc D

  • "Bang for your buck" is what I hope to deliver. The bare minimum each car that gets sent in will be 12 videos, and that's if the car is an absolute dud and DNFs all 12 qualifying videos — HSLmotorsports
  • And all I plan on charging is return postage — HSLmotorsports
  • Sounds great! I imagine, especially when starting off, entry costs can be daunting. Cheers — CutRock_R_Marc_D

Thanks guys for the advice! I'll definitely allow backup cars and teammates! I plan on filming 2-3 races at a time due to my work schedule and I can repair cars that get damaged. The fastest 61 cars will get to be in each race video, the fastest 41 get into the "big race", spot 42 goes to the winner of the "minor league" race (20 cars like the races on my current season) and spot 43 goes to the highest driver in points among the rest of the minor-league field.
