Any suggestions on how to separate a funny car body?

Dadvball Wednesday, 2/6/2013

I need to separate the funny car body from the chassis but I'm not sure how to do it without worrying if I'll break the hinge. There's not much of a space to get a small flat head screwdriver in there to pry it apart and to much pressure will probably break it. My Drag Car entry is old and has bent axles and tired wheels so a swap is needed. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

with a candle, heat and spead the "jaws" with a small screw driver, and separate the body / base...

Daddyvball, I'm assuming that you want to reuse the body that you have!

The 'jaws' Smitty is talking about is the orangish piece he cut off of another body in the pic above. I have a few different sized pocket screwdrivers. I got the body off of mine by taking the smallest pocket screwdriver and carefully prying the jaws apart. Then use the next size pocket screwdriver to pry a little more until the body comes off (same technique used to take the axles out of a metal base/chassis that you are reusing). And yes sometimes the 'jaw' will break, then you have to break out the JB Quik Weld!

I've heard it mentioned that people might use a match and heat up the jaws. Kids don't try this at home without adult supervision.

I wonder if a soldering iron with the screw-on screw driver tip might work. Not only would it apply heat, you can pry with it. Might want to hold on to the car with gloves of some sort ....might get a little warm

that would work... probably wouldn't heat the wheels as fast as the candle does, though i throw out the wheels anyway...
let us know how it goes .
