At what speed do you prefer watching racing videos?

Diecast64 Wednesday, 12/7/2016

Just trying to get a feel from everyone at what speed you would prefer watching race videos. I definitely like the slow motion, and have been using 1/8 speed for most of my videos, but some of my race videos get really long, especially if there are a lot of cars.  In the video below I have a race at several different speeds?  Which would you prefer to watch?

love the medium slow mo... 1/4 ?? ...  when the cars are side by side, and near the end on one gets a little sqoorly while the other sneeks by by a hair... worth the price of the popcorn...

First off, great lighting on your track...very easy to watch and see.

I think the 1/4 is plenty slow to get the drama out of it.

However, I think it'd be fine to make the speed based on closeness of the match (maybe only possible if you're doing post-production adjustment). I mean, if a Round 1 match-up is a blow out, there's no need to draw it out at even 1/4 speed - the winner/drama is never in question. You could go 1/2 speed for those and save yourself a few seconds time...as you know, it adds up.

Think about the highlights you see on TV. They only do slow-mo when there's reason to do slow-mo, otherwise it's just full replays.

I might also suggest getting a tighter shot from the start. That'll impact what type of slow-mo you do too.

And if you are doing slow-mo with software, what software are you using? I do my slow-mo with the iPhone and the rate can't be adjusted, so I can't even follow my own recommendation :( But if I could, I'd be going that route.

Thanks for the suggestions Brian.  I use both my Iphone and a GoPro to film and then both my Iphone and Windows Movie Maker to edit.  You can actually adjust the speed on both.  The video above was shot and edited on my Iphone.  The key to adjusting the speed on the Iphone is to use the Imovie app.  If you import the slomo video into the Imovie app you can do some editing and change the speed.  The following pic shows which icon will allow you to do that.

Here is where you find it in Windows Movie Maker

Yup, I shoot mine at 1/4 speed...and I think that is slow enough :)

And, you can always speed up the viewing speed on youtube

iMovie...right. I've used that before but quit when I found out just uploading my video via web retains the slow-mo-ness (just saved me a step). I'll have to revisit that then.

And a GoPro...no wonder your video looks so nice. Wish I had the budget for that type of thing...I just need to sell 3,000 more RLD t-shirts, haha! ;P
