Axle ends
First let me say that I apologize if this has been discussed in length before. I have scoured the Internet and forums to get the best answer or answers, but I'm not having much luck. My questions is when rebuilding a hot wheel car( specifically for racing ) not modding for looks, what is the best material to use for axles. ie. brass rods or steel. Now for the second question. What is the best way to get the flat ends of the axles? I've seen videos where a guy hammers down a brass .032 rod and it looks good, but I'm not having much luck getting them very flat and keeping the axels straight. Any help would be much appreciated. My son and I race cars downstairs and are trying to get into rebuilding specifically for racing. Thank you.

I've used hobby pipe to create the chassis-width axle and the slid cut Mattel FTE axles into it. This way I can have any width axle I need but still get the benefit of the original axles for wheel fit.
I have tried using various things for replacement axles...hat pins, needles, paper clips...but none of the, worked out well for racing. On the shelf its one thing, but pn the track you need them straight and ready to roll.
