Drag cars: purpose-built machines

I was first inspired to build the types of drag cars I built by some of the YouTube creators who do some really wild customizations. There’s one in particular who makes really cool dragsters, but what it appeared to me is that they were all show and no go. Similar to my model railroads, the trains are the actors and the layout is the stage in which they perform on. That’s sort of how my drag strip evolved into what it is. I wanted a stage for my custom cars.

I’m familiar with some of the tricks that pinewood derby cars use and imagine that hot wheels drag racing borrows from that experience. Though my cars don’t roll on three wheels, the tires aren’t cone shaped and I don’t use powdered graphite, I have found certain set ups that perform very well. The most important thing seems to be that the track width of the front axle should be equal to or greater than the track width of the rears. I also found an excellent source for drag slicks that are very true and are very scale looking.

Here are a few of the cars that I wheel swapped and customized. Some of them simply have the body and chassis filed away to clear the larger tires while others have custom painted interiors and engines or have 3-D printed detailed parts applied. And they all roll straight and fast!
