FTE axle / Gov'ner wheel swap, with hand tools

i used a mini hacksaw, hacksaw, file, snips [dykes], wire crimper, large safety pin...

file the previous cut on the 1/16" tube flat, then push the safety pin into the center [not your finger], wriggle it around...

rest it across the axle slots on the base, let it extend 1/32" on the filed side, leave a 1/16" on the to be cut side, the extra lets you file it flat after cutting and it not getting to short... then press the pin into the newly filed tube's center, wriggle it around...

  polish axles if you wish before you cut them in half, file the axle where the snips flatten it, slide the FTE axle into the gov'ner's wheel, slide the axle into the 1/16" tube, leave some end play, crimp the axle on top of the FTE axle, repeat on the other side...

  snip the junk axles off, trash them, hacksaw the pinch prongs to make a slot wide enough for the new axle tube,  drill a small hole centered in the axle slots, [not shown] counter sink the bottom of them,

j b quik the axle tube to the base, the hole will create a J B Rivet keeping the tube secured even if the jb q loses adhearance, when almost set, flip upside down and test roll it, if not straight press the safety pin into the j b q on the opposite side of the axle that you want the axle to move it will compress the jbq and push the axle in the direction wanted... because the axles don't free float in the tube, alignment is pretty easy if needed... think i got the tubes at Craftmania ? ...
