Glad to see this board

Hello All,

Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself a little.

I had been a frequent visitor to the original Redline site a few years back. I was a bit disappointed when I went there today and found no forums anymore. Luckily I found this one, and it looks like there are many more members, which is excellent. I was surprised there were actually many more clubs out there doing this than I thought.

My family has had organized "races" for about six years now, but my brothers and I have been doing this since we were quite young. Nowadays, It is usually our Christmas event, and we have expanded to inviting friends and what not to the event. We have six different events, and players compete for overall points trophies and events trophies. We have two types of downhill derby races - a normal drop (we currently use blue track and a video camera at the finish line) and a "stunt track" That we call our ironman competition. Depending on what we are feeling like, this could be hot wheels track with curves and loops or blue track with loops.

Whereas not as much of interest to this forum, We also do four other events that involve distance "racing" where we gravity drop cars on different tracks against each other, the farthest car wins (in certain events, cars must stay on their wheels) - downhill jump distance, outdoor "battle" distance (two cars dropped on a wide track that narrows and leads out onto concrete), oversize car downhill or truck cup (any vehicle that is too large to make a curve in the final event), and what is considered the most important to our group - the downhill distance. This event involves wrapping a track down a flight of stairs, into a curve and spitting out the cars on a wood floor to see which ones go the farthest.

The website hasn't been updated in a while but the website is http://www.cutthroatgames.com/vra.html , I am currently redoing it in between working on my dissertation, so i hope to get more pictures up soon and I will come back and post it once it has more of our speed races up on it.

Anyway, it is good to find more people using their toys for competitive events! I hope to check in here frequently and contribute to the community. Maybe even visit some of the local clubs here in Texas. (I am from PA, and that is where we have our events, so it really is whenever I go home for the holidays)

EDIT: I just went and checked the site and saw the flash menu was down... so really there is just the promo video for our 2009 Christmas Cup... but it does have some pictures if anyone is that bored. Oh, you may notice we go all out on trophies, lol.

Welcome to Redline Derby, Ska, and thanks for introducing yourself.

Redline Derby has come a long way since the original message boards over on Ning.com, we're bigger and better now! And it sounds like you're a racing veteran so you should enjoy the conversation here in the forums. With the Fantasy League getting ready to boot, you can be sure the shop talk will be happening daily.

I hope you have fun here and if you have any questions or feedback about the blog, forums or league, just post or PM me.

Sweet, I like the sound of some of those races!

Welcome...so you are in Texas now? where abouts? I'm in Austin.

Brian, thanks for the welcome - it is awesome that the community has grown so much since back a couple years ago!

Jobe, I am in Fort Worth - unfortunately the majority of my racing collection is in PA...

The events are a lot of fun - we go through cars fast on most of those distance events... although one year we set up downhill derby 70' track outside and by the end of the 124 bracket it was raining, so the end of the race had radically different driving conditions than the beginning. We actually totaled two racers (and I am sure you all know how infrequent it is to get a hop off a solid track when you are racing at the end of the bracket) including in the final. I had a funny car hop track and destroy an FTE Lancer that ate its way flawlessly up the charts. Crashed right into the back wheel well of the car and the lancer couldn't even make it down on the next run. My brother still complains about the trophy i robbed him of to this day.

We don't run the battle cup that often, but the most destructive by far is the jump... needless to say, most of us have different pools of cars, although I have friends who run the same ten cars in each event.

Well I grew up in Fort Worth, my whole family still lives there.

I'd like to do a distance jump off my track someday.

I remember seeing your video when I first joined the original RDR forum in '09. Very impressive! Looks like you have loads of fun over there in PA. (If you're a Steeler's fan, sorry about that SB loss. I've been a huge fan since the 70s and took the loss hard )
It would be interesting to see what Hot Wheels won the various events you hold.

It was a hard loss for many of my friends, but I am a Bills fan, so it is always a hard loss, no matter the week, for us! haha.

When I get the website redone (any suggestions on a visual editor that doesn't have the steepest learning curve would be appreciated!) I hope to get some pictures up of past winners for every event. I am going home this next week to run our St. Patrick's Day Slugout, so maybe I can take all the stock pictures for the website then. The one thing our database is missing is pictures of all the cars... unfortunately, that is beyond my programing expertise. We tend to name our cars individual rather than by model, so off the top of my head I cannot give the exact models that have prevailed over the years. I do plan to get the website up and have it be as informative as possible.

For web editing, Dreamweaver is probably a good pick. Maybe a bit expensive but will get things done and done pretty well. Of course, I haven't used a visual editor in quite some time but Adobe is still good stuff.

I have an older copy of DW somewhere... I may try to learn it after I move in a month here (right now things are hectic with school, teaching, and packing)

But in the meantime, after much clamoring from my brother who is stationed in Japan, I opened a temporary website, using one of those free sites that has the website - builder in it. (despite owning my own, very dilapidated website and the webspace that i pay annually for...) I am still in the middle of finishing some of it... but the address is http://vracing.weebly.com/

We are holding a competition when I go back up north next week, so I hope to put some more pictures and videos up then.
