Removing gold coating on diecast
Has anyone removed it off a car?
It appears it is plated, not paint.

oven cleaner is not good for aluminum,
so don't want to test something new
and ruin a casting with no spare

Try iso, or try Super Clean. That stuff takes the chrome off of plastic HW parts. It's how I black out my wheels. Might work for you.
I've had good success using undiluted bleach to take off the factory "chrome" plating. Just let the part sit in a little cup of bleach for 15-30 minutes seems to do the trick for me. Not sure if it will work on the gold, but it's all vacuum metallizing using the same aluminum base layer so it might be worth a try.

it's super tough. and acids and bases eat the diecast,
would probably leave the shell and eat the zink

I used to use oven cleaner to remove chrome on 1/25 car parts. Now I use it to remove chrome, tampos, and paint from plastic 1/64. Haven't tried it on gold or ZAMAC. Maybe?
