Hand drill to open a hotwheel

Hi everyone! I wanted to know how to open up a hotwheel with a hand drill (I'm 14 and my parents don't want me using a power drill or soldering iron). I don't really know what size of hand drill works best, so if you guys could please let me know what kind, or if you guys can give me a link I would really appreciate, since I'm so hyped up to make my first custom!
Thanks!

Welcome!
I hand drill all mine, it takes a little practice, but not that hard
start with something to hold your bits. replacement chucks for a drill are cheap
and some sharp bits. buy the bits in sized packs, I buy Gyros on amazon
the cheap multisets are not sharp enough hand drill with.
i forget what exact sizes I have,
but I only use 3 sizes I use,
I think it's a #51 for the hole the screw goes in to put it back together
(this on I am fuzzy on) 3/16 to drill the rivot
and ~1/4" to clean the hole, and remove rivot overhang the 3/16 didn't take off
To drill, hold the chuck in the palm, line up, press, and twist.
then losten grp, slip your hand back CCW, but don't "unscrew" from the chip you have raised,
use you other hand to hold the car straight, and a finger or two to steady the chuck,
when you "re-grip" it
be careful, work slow and easy
and if a bit won't cut diecast, throw it away and get a sharp one
dull bits make you push too hard, and break the bit,
and maybe stab yourself, too
keep us posted
good luck
dr
- Thank you so much, I will DEFINITELY take a look at the drill bits and the chuck, but I really like your advice. Will definitely keep you posted, thanks! — Revurbo
- Okay, so i’m about to order the supplies later today, and wanted to ask which ones you get, Cobalt or HSS (High Speed Steel)? And I also wanted to know if the drill chuck you sent me is a specific type you need, or I can just find any other drill chuck? And just to confirm, the sizes are #51, 3/16, and 1/4, right? Also, you were mentioning #51 is for screws, so does that mean you screw the base back together, or can I just glue it back together with epoxy resin? And one last thing, do they break easily? Because I see them in packs of 10+. Thanks a lot, you have been the most helpful! — Revurbo
- the 51's break easy until you get the hang of it, and the 10 packs are the way to go. I screw all my cars together. — dr_dodge
- Thanks a lot, but do I get Cobalt or High Speed Steel drill bits? Thanks a lot! — Revurbo
I have a nice old hand drill, I think is in the basement. I'll go take a look. DM me your address and I'll ship it to you, no charge.
- thats very nice of you! — dr_dodge
- I have an old yankee I'd like to make bits for. gotta love old tools! — dr_dodge
- What a guy StoopidFish! — Dutch_Clutch_Racing
- That is amazingly kind of you, but I will order my own, no need to bother, but thank you so much, you are awesome! — Revurbo
- Ok... no worries... if you find you need it, let me know. — Stoopid_Fish_Racing
Mom and dad need to stop helicoptering........plus dad should show you how to properly use power tools instead of keeping you handicapped.
- They are too busy to help, but thanks to all of you guys, I think hand drill is the best for me! — Revurbo
- I've two adult children now so I can state this from experience.....no parent who provides for their child is ever "too busy" to invest time in their child's development. Instead of accepting a "no you can't do that" from your parents show them a DIY video from YouTube on drilling apart cars and then ask them to guide you on doing the same thing. You're old enough to be tinkering with tools and the only way you'll get experience is to begin using them. I'd show you how to do it in my household and supervise your first few to make sure you have the hang of it. — BadWoolRacing
- Thanks, but I’m getting a hand drill now, so no worries! — Revurbo
Welcome to RedlineDerby newcomer!
- Thank you! I have been reading some articles here for the past few days, and they are VERY useful! Btw can you please tell me what this “Racing” is? I see races scheduled, but don’t know what they are. Thanks! — Revurbo
- Races are posted/scheduled. You can read the rules as to what cars are allowed and what weight they can be built to etc. You enter a race, build your car and mail it to the race host and they run the race and post a video of it. Usually on YouTube. After the race is over....if you sent return shipping $ to the host....they mail your car back to you. — Dutch_Clutch_Racing
- yup, pretty much it — dr_dodge

Revurbo.....follow the link above for an example of a race.
- Thanks a lot! Wow, they are cool, I guess I will definitely have to try one! Thank you! — Revurbo
- Yes... Jungle Falls is pretty cool! — ManiacMotorsports
Welcome! I just started a YouTube channel. I run one off-road track and am building another track. I'm glad to see more builders similar in age to me joining this hobby.
Let me know if you want to send some builds to me to test them if you don't have a track! (Right now I only have an off-road track running though) I'm planning to do some exhibition races.
- Thank you! Will you have a race scheduled? — Revurbo
- I just received some test cars from Dutch Clutch Racing, so I'm going to do a race with those. This isn't a real mail in, just a test race on my YouTube channel. — ManiacMotorsports
- Your channel is pretty cool! You just got a new subscriber! Just remember me as a OG ;) — Revurbo
- Great! I'll try to lol — ManiacMotorsports
