I almost have to ask if there will be an equal survey for the racers themselves....  who are the good ones, who are the troublemakers .....

  • Lol... — ManiacMotorsports
  • Actually, yes...I think it would be fair to rate entrants, at least some sort of indicator. But that's more than a simple survey, ha! All in good time, hopefully. — redlinederby

If we are going to be rated, there should be a feedback system in place to help those who are less than perfect.

  • agreed — dr_dodge
  • I agree. I know I wasn't getting a perfect score in the "execution" category simply for the fact that I use my phone for filming and editing but if someone who paid return postage didn’t get their cars back let me know, one thing I’ll do for the upcoming season is DM everyone their tracking number — HSLmotorsports
  • HSL, mate, you do a great job. A true hobbyist, No entry fee, genuine,, and return cars, and run x 10 time the events. — CutRock_R_Marc_D

Probably gonna regret commenting here, but I'm gonna suggest that a classic five star kind of rating system is really not gonna work here so well. We're not delivering a product or a service really as much as an experience. For me it boils down to three issues:

-did the event occur as scheduled and not 4 or 5 months late

-did the event seem to be fair and organized

-did cars get returned/prizes mailed in a timely fashion

Such things as flashy graphics – AI filler material – killer camera, angles, or music should not be considered unless you want to start a section called production values. New hosts should be shielded from being rated publicly for three events. They would be flagged by a probationary marker (P) on their initial events as a notification/warning to those who may want to race there. And finally as a note to hosts, the more you ask for the more I expect out of you. By that I mean, if you start saying this casting or that casting, super specific paint jobs, or massive amounts of lead just to be competitive, my expectations for you to have the event and do a great job go straight up. looking at this, I do see that I did not mention communication. Not sure what to do about that. I figure if a host cannot communicate clearly there's gonna be a lot of problems either way.

  • totally agree. I would also add, must have sent some cars out, too — dr_dodge
  • agree — Drag_Racing_In_The_Desert
  • Absolutely agree...just not possible at this point. Maybe it's better to just wait for when it can... — redlinederby
  • Yes, I thinks in many cases we are comparing apples to oranes to beetroot and lemons! And no fee hobbyists races to full pro $$ where you pay an entry fee. — CutRock_R_Marc_D

@Abby - Fair feedback. However the stars in this survey are pretty much asking to rate all the points you bring up. This isn't about content production values at all, hopefully people aren't seeing it that way, if so then it fails to help anyone.

But I also don't think these things are just either true or false. Did the race occur as scheduled? Maybe it didn't but only got delayed by a week or so and well within reason. I don't think it's fair to give that type of situation a complete "No" answer as that might suggest to others that it didn't happen at all...hence the stars give a little bit of leeway there. It's all subjective and will differ per person, and that's fine.

I agree that not having Comments to go along with the stars is not as helpful to the hosts. Technically it just wasn't feasible the way this survey was built so I figured any sort of feedback is better than none...but maybe not.

Although, I will say there's nothing stopping anyone from sending anyone a PM or even an email with private feedback about their operations. I know that's not anonymous but if one can be constructive and polite, then that shouldn't matter much.

All in all, maybe this survey doesn't help much...dunno. It's not really integrated with the calendar or anything else on the site, so it's a reference that requires an extra step that I doubt people will take. But a systematic solution just isn't ready or built yet.

I'll let this thing ride through this week and if it seems to have done more harm than good, it doesn't have to hang around.

  • Damned if you do.....damned if you don't. — Dutch_Clutch_Racing
  • You can't please everyone, and everyone has their own opinion. You do an amazing job curating this site and community. — JBlotner42
  • the ratings should be viewable if I elect not to take it, a view only? — dr_dodge
  • They are. There’s a link at the top or just scroll down past all the stars. — redlinederby

I would just say my comment above was to try and boil it down to the very basics:

- did the event actually happen as promised or was it weeks / months late

- was the content posted on YT and at least clear as to what was going on

-were any deliverables actually delivered

I would also go with a 3 star rating: 1 needs improvement, 2 meets expectations, 3 exceeds expectations. On this scale if you are riding between 1.5 to 2.5 you are rocking it.

Much respect to all the hosts out there who are working hard and rocking it.

  • much respect to all hosts, even if you realize that it's not easy and struggle. do it for fun F'k a rating if you know it's the best you can do — dr_dodge
  • Dr Dodge......Yes,do it for fun, your enjoyment. I am basically a hobbysit, do it for fun, yeah I can understahnd those that do justify entry fees, tropiies, etc. But, hey here for some communication, beyond the competition. Cheers Marc D — CutRock_R_Marc_D

Should this be updated every half year?

  • My hope is that we'll have something more systematic before too long and the feedback can be linked to entrants and have a little more meaning. But otherwise, yes, we should probably do this at least twice a year to account for new hosts and such. — redlinederby
  • Haggis, you from Scotland? — dr_dodge
  • Yeah — HaggisGarage
  • How'd you know XD — HaggisGarage

this is getting a little out of hand for a supposed fun little hobby with very limited participants in both the racers and hosts. Sad.

  • It certainly says something... — redlinederby
  • Best post in the entire thread. We are talking about toy cars afterall. — Sunshine_City_Garage
  • agreed, who dropped the fun ball??? doesn't matter, just throw it back in here — dr_dodge
  • this is what being at the edge of something new is about. On the Great side, we get to help set standards by working thru our problems together — dr_dodge

Just a quick observation that all but like a dozen folks have 3-stars and up! What's to complain about? And the handful that are at the bottom only have 2 votes, which means a couple people just gave them 1 star for the hell of it (ie, they didn't read the instructions)...so they're likely invalid and within a margin of error.

If anything, this survey is showing that pretty much every host is doing a great job and doing well in all aspects of hosting. Especially given how much of a free-for-all this survey was, there's no good reason for anyone to be bummed or pissed.

  • Take it as constructive critisim. Also, if everyone all gets 5 stars then its not much or a rating system. Opinions are like A** holes, everyone's got one. ;-) — JBlotner42
  • I agree with you. Why are people mad over 4 star ratings? I think it’s a good system. You’ll never make everyone happy. Bottom line is if you’re going to take people’s money and property as a race host you owe your fellow racer the very least of running the race in a timely manner and also returning their property. Not everyone is going to be a 5 but anything over 3-3.5 is acceptable. If a 4 star rating hurts your feelings then you’re looking at this all wrong. — BlueLineRacing
  • I had fun hosting and the rating system no feeling on that. It was a simple decision do I want to host or do the work and build more competitive cars that’s all nobody mad here — Baddad
  • yup! you will sort this out. min requirements for posting/hosting races. must be a member for 30???days. solves the "reg. log in scam a race stuff" may be a way you can sort "scams" — dr_dodge

1st off thank you Redline for going through all the trouble you do for this site, and the community!

2nd I think this is a great start to rating system.  A place to add feedback on what they could approve on be nice. But this is JUST a start.

3. Yes we are all here to have fun. No one is trying to stop. As a host we need to know how and what we can approve on. As a builder/racer we need to know who can be trusted. That's what this all about. It's not about who is the best or most fun to watch. No one is loosing points because of how they view the entertainment of a channel.  So please folks try not to take it to Hart. We all appreciate the work everyone puts in.  98% of the people in this hobby are the greatest. This hobby is growing and this is a way to help with that growth.

4. I am happy with the positive reviews I am getting thank you all who gave me good ratings.

Interesting.

Maybe the voting shouldn’t have been anonymous, but you can’t change that now as people have already placed their votes anonymously.  I suggest a mechanism more like Amazon and others use.  You should be able to get a breakdown of each individual vote including their name, rating and comment.  The Track Host should also be able to post a response.

I would suggest a similar rating for Diecast Builders.  I know of some really awesome Diecast Builders that I would highly recommend to other Track Hosts.  The Track Host is also looking for good communication, race entry arrives on-time, good adherence to stated rules and car is in acceptable working order, and if they would recommend the Builder or not.  As Track Hosts we have experienced cars that arrive late or not at all and without communication.  We have also all at some point, at the Diecast Builder’s permission, had to “fix” their entry.

I’m reachable through RLD mail, or through my Facebook Group: DiecastRacing.ca

I post my event updates on my Facebook Group as well.  If you are participating in my events, please don’t forget to join my Group.

  • Totally agree across the board and it's in future plans. This survey was something quick to try and see if it would even be useful. — redlinederby
  • It is a fair comment, that if a builder enters a race (ie signs up via comment) and then cant make the event (For many valid reasons) they should then either message or comment to the host, so they are not waiting around, or host can alternatively get another entry. Cheers — CutRock_R_Marc_D
