National Corvette Museum - Sink hole collapse

Milton-Fox Wednesday, 2/12/2014

Thankfully no one was hurt.

It happened at 5:40 AM, but it is still a sad day at the Fox hole. Mrs Fox and I have been there several times. This is the area under the yellow tee pee looking part of the building. 8 cars in the hole. All part of the permanent collection and two of them are the 1 and 1.5 million production vehicles signed by the assembly plant workers at the plant across the street.

List of cars effected.

UPDATED 9:00 AM -- Confirmed list of Corvettes that have fallen into the sinkhole. This list is from the Corvette Museum.

1993 ZR-1 Spyder on loan from General Motors
2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil” on loan from General Motors

The other six vehicles were owned by the National Corvette Museum including:

1962 Black Corvette
1984 PPG Pace Car
1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette
1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette
2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette
2009 White 1.5 Millionth Corvette

This picture shows some of the cars that fell in. The photo is from April 2012 though. The 1.5 millionth is in the front right fore ground. The black spider on the platform is the GM owned ZR1 Spyder, the black one in the left fore ground might be the Mallett Hammer and the white car in the left back ground I believe is the 1 million car. They move them around a lot.

That's sickening to see that, are they going to move all the others out? I'm hoping they do because those sinkholes sometimes get to the point where they just keep getting deeper and wider....

I went back and added an overhead shot of the museum complex - showing the yellow dome area impacted.

Yes they have pretty much emptied out the dome. There are usually 30 to 40 cars on display there. I am hearing that they have taken the only 1983 still in existence out of the museum and over to the assembly plant - I think it actually belongs to them still. The rest are out in the old main hallway. Based on the photos I think moving them was a risky thing to do, but a good thing in the long run. Looks like the local firemen helped them move them out!

Can you imagine the first person to walk into the room and see that?

Things are still sketchy, but it still looks like only the 8 cars were lost. There maybe 8 cars still on the perimeter wall as it looks like there is no fill underneath the floor on that side. Here is an image looking over the edge of the hole. You can right click on the photo below and open it in a new tab.

The museum has sent us members updates twice today. At 5:44 the motion sensor alarms went off. The security video shows the floor buckling twice then two cars falling in first. You cant see them in this photo and then the others fell in on top of the first two and another collapse with the last two cars. So I am guessing first responders got the first glimpses.

Working to recruit some new members over to the races so I have been plugging RLD where I can. You have to understand that the OT section for the Corvette Forum is a sarcastic, negative band of ne'r do wells for the most part. BUT! someone posted this today...
