REDLINE DERBY RACING EVENT SITE LAUNCH

After what seems like forever, I'm happy to announce the launch of a new feature here at the Redline Derby web site, a diecast racing event calendar and tournament tools! Click "Events" in the menu at the top of the page and use your Fantasy League account to login.

http://www.redlinederby.com/racing/

If you're part of a racing club or put on other diecast events, be sure to post your dates on the calendar. You'll be able to include detailed information and photos plus a handy "I'm interested" tracker that will help you gauge interest in your event.

But this addition to the web site is more than just an event calendar. Every mail-in tournament hosted through the site also ties into a new diecast racing leaderboard. You'll earn points for placing in mail-in tournaments which will get you on the leaderboard - the more races you enter, the more chances you have to move up the list.

I'm really excited about this new part of the site and I hope it will help everyone that hosts mail-in tournaments and events. This calendar isn't intended to replace posting here in the forum, it's simply a tool that will hopefully provide a little more organization so people looking to get involved can do so without having to surf through an overwhelming number of threads.

That being said, this is a brand new feature and it's far from complete but I wanted to get something out there for you to use so I can get feedback on where to take things next. Everyone here as been a HUGE help in making the Fantasy League a better game to play and I know y'all will do the same for this new event calendar and tools.

The event calendar is a little bare right now but I hope you'll check it out and post some club dates and maybe even host a mail-in tournament to get familiar with things.

Please, please, please share your feedback as you try it out. Post here in the forum or PM or send email. Report any problems or errors you experience immediately and share any features you'd like to see. I have a wish list of features already started but I want to hear what you think, good and bad.

First post! heheh Cool deal, sounds like it can help allot.

Edit- I went and checked it out. It will look better when the rest of the hosts input their data.

hmmm.... I notice that its difficult to put the results of a tournament when a player sent multiple cars. So if someone got 1st and 2nd in an event you wouldn't be able to show that because you can only put a players name down once.

Other than that, everything looks great! I love the look of the tournaments page and it all works smoothly. Thanks B!

Edit: Don't actually send any cars to this event please. Feel free to play around with it and the new tools though!

This is awesome! I do have a question though. Can we hold our own local tournaments (tournaments with my own hw collection, not mail in) and post them there or should we post them on the forum instead?

Thanks for the first impressions! If you are putting some fake stuff in there to test things out, PLEASE DELETE IT before too long otherwise people might think it's real...or do a very good job of saying it's fake in the event details. Like put the word "TEST" in your event title or something.

@Worpex - The results for mail-in tournaments are unique because it is tied to ranking players. Every mail-in tournament needs to results in single order of players...so your mail-in tournaments need to have some sort of scoring system. I decided it was more fair to award people for their highest position rather than every position. If someone sends in 4 cars, by all rights they could end up placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. By doing single order results it gives people that mail-in cars more of a chance to earn points and get ranked. So your feedback is correct about posting results for multiple people and even for cars...but you can put those details in the event recap when you finish a tournament. You can put all that information there with photos, or you can use the forum to if you're more comfortable here.

Check out the docs on how a mail-in tournament works and what hosts need to do:

@McJiggles - The tournament managing tools are really intended for mail-in tournaments and are centered around people that send in cars. If you're running local tournaments that aren't mail-in, you can post that as a non-mail-in event if you want and just leave address details empty so people don't show up at your house or something. If you're just doing some in-home racing on a weekend or something and just want to share what cars won and stuff, the forum is probably the best location to share all that.

This new event calendar isn't intended to eliminate the posting of events in the forum. If anything the forum should be used to supplement what you create on the calendar. The calendar has some nifty features that let you outline all the rules and stuff but you can use the forums for Q&A with people and to communicate tournament updates or car changes or whatever.

Brian, I like what you've done here! After reading your how-to docs I have a question or two.

1) If we're ranking the person and not the car then shouldn't all entrants have the same number of cars entered in a tournament?
2) If we're running a series should each stop on the series be it's own tournament, then just add the points from each venue for overall placings? Each host will have to run the tie-breakers like we did in FEATHERWEIGHT CHALLENGE Series 1.

I'm sure I'll have more questions or comments in time, and a big THANK YOU for putting this together for the diecast racers. If there was a 'thumps up' emoticon I'd give you two!

I guess I saw it if people enter more cars they increase their chances of winning. I know that's maybe not the best way but I think it might encourage more people to enter. If they only have time or desire to make one custom car, there's no reason they shouldn't be able to enter. Giving the host an option to enforce a number of entries is a good idea so we can work on adding that feature.

As far as series go...Im not real sure what the best solution is there. It wasnt really designed with series in mind for this first version, but it's most definitely in the future. But until then the best way to utilize the calendar might be to create one event that represents the entire series, otherwise people would have to register for each leg of the series. Just make it clear in the rules that the event spans several tracks and dates. Since a series requires coordination of several people/tracks, I'm not sure exactly how to approach that within the software just yet.

There is a lot of room for improvement so please keep throwing out your ideas and observations.

Thanks to those that have reported some bugs they've seen in the new Racing Calendar and Mailin Manager. As I see people using it I've noticed a lot of little things I need to add. The list of additions and fixes is growing so there should be an update soon. But please, please, please continue to try it out --- post an event, try a mailin --- it's not perfect out of the gate but, much like the Fantasy League went, the more people try the better it will become.

Some things on the update short list:
- Account for a mailin series
- Give mailin host option to denote if event is ranked or unranked
- Form to contact a mailin host (rather than me)

Trying to create an event for the Sportsman Series. It could be my junky computer, but

Not able to click on "Your Tracks" or "Your Events".

The other buttons work.

edit- Oh I see now it's probably because I don't have a "certified" track. Although I do meet the requirements.
