Newbie questions

LostTribesGaming Sunday, 3/2/2025

Hello everyone. I have Facebook to blame for getting me into all of this. But now that I have some cars, tools, and some bookmarked videos for modding, I had some race & hosting related questions I was hoping you guys could answer

1) I've been watching a bunch of the racing videos and I've noticed about a dozen or so familiar names from people who are obviously submitting their own cars. But I've noticed in some of the larger tournaments that there are a bunch who are unfamiliar. I'm still new to all of this so I'm sure I'm missing something, but do some tracks hosting events just add "filler" racers to make it seem larger (or maybe as needed if they don't have enough to fill out each bracket)? I don't care if anyone does, I'm not passing judgment, I'm just curious. Essentially like NPCs from a role playing game or something.

2) I noticed a few car owners who submit their own cars for racing to other tracks sometimes have their own tracks that they film and post online. Is it considered bad form to race on your own track against others? I could see it possibly being an integrity issue, but at the same time, it also may be a non-issue.

3) When you guys are putting together another race (televised online or otherwise), do you limit the field of play to cars that have existing real world models (such as a Mustang, Shelby, Mercedes, etc.) or are some of the fictional cars that Hot Wheels or other companies come out with acceptable as well?

Discussion

Welcome to RedlineDerby!

These are "my" opinions....not the rules.....

1)   I don't believe there is much problem on RedlineDerby posted races with getting enough participants to fill a race/bracket - seems more the norm that a race host needs to LIMIT the # of entrants to keep it manageable - especially newer hosts with less experience.

2)  I am NOT a huge threat in winning races - I like to think I will be someday - but I myself will not race in races that I host.

3)  The race host can limit the models to whatever they wish to do.  The host sets the rules.   It keeps it fun and interesting.  Some tracks are known for allowing any castings and of course there are also model specific or or "theme" specific races.   Gassers, Funny Cars, American Muscle Cars, pickups.....etc.

Welcome again to RedlineDerby....you'll find a lot of friendly and helpful people around here.   Hope to see you on the track!

Hi and welcome - I'm just finishing my first year racing in March. And like Dutch these are just some comments

1. Sometimes a host may have to add a filler car or two if some cars didn't pass inspection or are solid DNF's on the track. But typically this is not an issue and many of the 'new names' are new racers like yourself.

2. Some hosts may race on their own tracks which I feel is fine if its exhibition racing or just some general running cars - test cars etc. If its a official Redline race on the books well that can be tricky to have a host compete.

3. As Dutch indicated its up to the track host to lay out the rules for their track / event.

Best thing you can do is work on getting some cars into races that interest you and then observe and learn.

I'm gonna just say hello and welcome to this amazing community. I'll let the ones who have been here longer and can explain things better answer the questions. But one thing I will say is, familiarize yourself with this site and check it often as races fill up fast. For the most part, this is the hub for diecast racing. Also, most of the community is pretty active on Facebook. Like AbbyNormal said, observe and learn.

Welcome to Redline Derby Racing! When you want to add weight to your car, golf club weighting tape is the way to go. Infinitely customizable and stackable, it allows you to weight cars any way you want to.

Welcome to the Rabbit hole, I have only hosted a few Races and my experience has been I don't get all the entries that singed up. So the only coarse is to fill the empty slots, My take is you don;'t let me know before hand and it happens twice your 86'ed from my track. Comminucate and alls good, As for the rules on the race its the Hosts choice.

I personally Don't like to Race on my own track as I think its a Advantage. I have Spicific castings race and open race with a Rally theme, Pretty open to choice of cars you like. There are many Hosts that will go with Fantasy castings as well as real world cars. Am hammerd this spring but a thinking of hosting a race that will be limited to certain castings. Choice of 4 to 8 casting.

To your second question, so long as a host discloses that they too will enter their own event in the race post here, that covers the ethical bases -- speaking just as a fan. The skill of a wide field of racers I think overcomes home track advantage

When you host your own events a herd of folks will show interest. Aim for a bracket friendly number like 32 if you are holding 4 car groups for road racing. If the total field doesn't fit nicely we have very creative minds able to offer ideas!

Hold a couple of events with your own garage of cars first, get a good feel for the work behind the scenes of showrunning. Hosting a mail in event requires so much more

Welcome to the fun. I operate Jungle Falls Raceway.  I have only been in the game for about 2 years. I'm not a car builder. I tried to put some together and wasn't very successful competing. I do enjoy tinkering with cars from time to time but definitely not my strong suit. I really enjoy building tracks. More of road courses than drag strips. I have hosted multiple races at Jungle Falls.  My first official mail in tournament was pure chaos. I had 78 cars show up and had zero experience in hosting. A, it was way to many cars for my first attempt.  I did stumble my way through it but would not recommend being that big to start. The following tournament i limited the # of participants.  I normally let 40 people sign up for a race. I only race 32 out of the 40. Usually a time trial for each car i received.  Slowest cars get cut from tournament. There are always some people who sign up that don't send car or it gets lost in the mail. Worst case scenario if you don't have enough cars is to either shrink the field participating in event or add your own cars to fill the gap.

So to answer first question, I generally don't race my cars in event that I am hosting. If I have to add my own car to fill a bracket it's basically a free win to whomever else is matched up against my car. Seems to be fairest way in my mind to handle that issue. Also I'm not a car builder so my cars aren't a threat to begin with. If you have stated that you will be racing in your own event it shouldn't be an issue.  If it is, I'm sure you will hear about it from participants.

As far as last question.  I have done multiple different events. From the Beetle Bonanza where it had to a Volkswagen Bug only. To my Modified Mayhem event where it could be any casting they builder wanted. That's kind of best part about hosting an event. You create the rules. You choose if it's only one casting or multiple.  I had an event called the Bowtie Beatdown where as long as it was a chevy, it could race.  My last event was Beautiful Busses and Trains.  It was an awesome event to me because it wasn't a typical casting used regularly.

Sorry for the lengthy response but hopefully it helps answer some questions.  RedLineDerby is an awesome place for any kind of help and guidance needed. I've learned a ton in the 2 years I've been here. As long as you are having fun and enjoy it. Do it the best you can.  I am always willing to help in anyway I can.

I don't mind the long replies at all. Thank you all again for replying! I highly doubt anyone here remembers the old Front Page Sports Football Pro series of games (96-98 predominantly) but I used to play and run my own leagues there (and played in several others) and owning a team would become an issue if your team started to beat the brakes off of the others. So when I got back into it briefly several years later I was just the commissioner of the league and simmed the games for all of the other players. Kind of like a storyteller or game master for table top RPGs (hence my name here).

I'm actually really excited to start trying this. I have no idea whose videos I stumbled onto on Facebook, but when I tried looking for clues that is when I stumbled onto 3dbotmaker, LRL, GTR, and some others I'm sure I'm forgetting (obviously including this place, which I think Redline was the first I found on YT). I'm hoping to get some money together to start piecing together a track so I will at least have something to test my cars on when they are ready

Good evening, and welcome!

for all the above questions,

you quoted RPGs.  well if you host you are the DM.

to make the rounds come out right (often when people don't send cars) host will add theirs.

most host cars "suck" (not the fastest) but, are not terrible

if you need 12 to fill a race and 10 show up, the show must go on, add 2 "bin cars"

and start racing.

so, you don't get to ask questions without some back at ya

what racing do you like?

do you have a track, and channel?

were you a collector before finding the dark side?

again,

welcome & cheers,

dr
