Scoring points and stat tracking, feedback wanted

I've been outlining some features that will allow us to better track race stats and points, so just looking to get feedback on some ideas. Most of these ideas I've pull from history so it shouldn't look weird, just kinda formalizing it so I know how to continue building things.

I see 2 categories of points

  • Race points
  • Event points

Race points (RP) are the points earned by winning in an individual bracket. Race points determine who wins overall in an event. For this I was going to go with our usual +1 point per win and +2 points for winning the whole bracket.

Event points (EP) are the points earned by placing in an overall event. So if you place 1st in overall race points for a series, you would get event points. I see +3 for 1st, +2 for 2nd and +1 for third.

My thought is to track points per year and overall career for each person. Points will be awarded automatically as people submit results to the web site. In many ways this isn't any different than using the spreadsheets we're using right now, only what I'm making will be a feature of the site and provide for some consistent organization and easy access.

Your thoughts on this system and scoring in general is appreciated.

I have been wondering about the typical race scoring of 1 point per win plus 2 to win.  Because the third place car gets an "extra" race, it scores the same amount of points as the second place car, which doesn't seem right.  For instance in last week's middleweight race, second place car TE #90 and third place car C-10 #66 both received 3 points.

That's a tough one...I like knowing the 'top 4' cars for a race. That means that you need to have a race for third. And since the third place car wins a race, it seems fair that it should get a point. But this means that the second and third place cars get the same points (3).

Maybe award both cars that get in the final a point for making the final...and the winner would get an additional  point...it would be 5 for 1st, 4 for 2nd, and 3 for 3rd that way?

  • I'll finish the Rookies and Middleweights the same way I have been...Beaters, I will start doing the new way — 72_Chevy_C10

Just thought of something I failed to consider...points in the loser's bracket...

In the case of double elimination, are "win" points awarded in the loser's bracket or just the upper bracket?

My initial thought is that points in a loser's bracket could skew overall points since not every tournament will be a double. So going through the lower bracket doesn't get you any points unless you win it all to get to the upper bracket and then win.

And I guess when it comes to determining 3rd place when there's not a lower bracket...I dunno, are there multiple 3rd place finishers then? My gut says no to that as it could get out of hand real quick...in theory, someone could get lots of points for just being consistently 3rd place. Maybe then it's just winner and runner-up that get Event Points...? +2EP for 1st, +1EP for 2nd.
