It was a hot one this holiday weekend and while the big boys raced their cars in Indy, there was also some excitement a mere 4 hours away in Central Ohio as the 9th season of the Fantasy League kicked off with three tournaments.

See complete results and leaderboards

Green Flag IX - Winners: RED 64 / VW 181 FTE
A few rookies made it to the first race of the season but it was an old veteran that took the checkered flag. The Thing FTE has been a favorite for several seasons but always ended up just shy of taking home gold. However, now that the VW FTE is off the books for at least the rest of this season, players have lost what has been a guaranteed point-getter. The best car to have is a car that wins a lot but does't get retired.

Elsewhere in the tournament, the new rookie and all-metal Mercedes 540K put on an impressive display against the winner right out of the gate. The Mercedes was incredibly smooth and incredibly quick, making the VW earn its first round win. The Mercedes might have started off this season with a loss but whoever enters that car next will likely have a winner. Otherwise there wasn't much drama on the track. Other rookie failed to make it out of the first round, but both Straight Pipes and Old #3 proved to have some punch...I'll even say that #3's win over the Form GT LM was a borderline upset.

And while rookie cars might have not had a good outing in the first tournament, a big congrats to the rookie player RED 64 that won their first tournament in the league.

Shelby Memorial 500 - Winners: Newman39 / Corvette C6
After the opening races the crowd took a moment of silence to remember the racing legend Carroll Shelby. A parade of Shelby-modified cars went down the track one after another in an unmatched display of style and power. Once things got underway the tournament was the Corvette C6 show as it dominated all the way to the winner's circle, but the rest of the field wasn't without its action.

The most impressive battle saw the 68 Cougar squeak by the Vega, Ford and even the Stock Car to make it to the final. And judging by the points from this bracket, it's safe to say victories like the Cougar's was a surprise to say the least. Mrs. Robinson's favorite car showed that just because a car is a little old doesn't mean it can't be desirable.

On the points side of things, Newman39 took home the W with a commanding lead over the entire field. Despite entering the Weinermobile, his picks were unmatched and he went back to the pits with 160 points and the top purse of 300 credits.

Long Weekend - Winners: Multispeed / Corvette C6 Convertible
The Corvettes kept things going in the final tournament of this holiday weekend as another C6 took home the trophy. However, opponents of the Corvette put up good fights, making the C6 earn each win along the way, especially the final win which almost went to the rookie Cadillac.

The middle of this bracket saw the most drama as the Ferrari and Z had a great match-up followed by the dead-even heats of the Delorean and Fast Fish. But the rest of the bracket was without much surprise, especially if the leaderboard is any clue. Winner Multispeed put up an impressive 255 points to take home the 300 credits but on down the line points were above 100.

Next week
For the second week of Fantasy League racing we travel to Washington for two tournaments on the JDC442 track. Make sure you check out the track profile and scout the cars you think can bring in the points.

You all earned credits from submitting brackets and won even more if you placed high enough on the leaderboard. Use these credits to unlock new cars and even previously retired cars. Add them to your garage and save them for a future tournament to give you an edge.

A weak effort on my behalf this week...looking to improve in the next rounds.
