Substitute for open straight track

AllEight Tuesday, 12/31/2024

I've been testing vinyl soffit for my open straights, I'm liking it and believe it's gonna work fine. Depending on how you cut the sides or walls a 12'x12"×4" piece will give you 12 to 36 feet of open track for about $20.00. It's a 1/4 inch wider than crash racers but that's an easy fix and the seams match up really nicely.

I love the creativity around here.  That's a very neat idea!

That is really good, what are cars like going down it

  • I would say as good as the crash racers, plus it's sets flat. I'd show you but the site won't except my video — AllEight

For a second I thought that was the same stuff I'm using, but I looked up vinyl soffit and that's not what I have; I have some thing that is like rubber and bendy but I have no idea what it's called. I was at Lowe's a few months ago when I spotted it stacked on the shelf with no packaging. It looked like 1/64 road so I grabbed a whole bunch of it.

I am absolutely intrigued!

is there a brand name? How long as a continous piece?

This can be a real game changer

it needs ribs, but my Jamestown bypass uses metal tale,

and piano wire of vavious sizes to guide cars

2 pieces of 1/4" rod, a super flat surface, and great stuff (spray foam)

it could be self supporting long straight track, and out door friendly (non A/C'd shed)

post (or PM me) more details!

Great Find!

dr

  • What you end up with depends on what you start with and how you cut it. A 12'x12" piece cut like mine or what I call with walls will give you one 12 foot run. If you go with what I call sides you would get two 12 foot runs, that's 24 feet of track for around $20.00 With the test I've run I don't believe ribs will be needed. If I was buying new I would go with 12'x16"x4" that would give me two 12 foot runs with walls for around $25 No special brand. — AllEight

  • Yeah it is amazing all the differing things one can use as track when you look around. Great to see what people come up with that may suit! — CutRock_R_Marc_D

I have used this. Laid out along a 1×4. It works really well for long straights. Used a basic piece of plastic for side that doesn't bend up. Comes in rolls of 25 feet. And it is self adhesive on back. Easily cut with scissors and cars roll smoothall the way down.

More testing using the soffit just as a run off to see how the cars travel. I'm very satisfied with the soffit and will be using it in my track build. youtube.com/shorts/j2g8YUs1kFs?si=fSKTd0oNHsABd4mV
