Trackside diorama...

I'm just seeing if there is interest in this idea. With my new track setup, I have room along the track, and I thought it might be cool if everyone that raced regularly had their own garage along the track.

It would be modular...I could send out 12" x 12" (or 12 x 18 maybe) squares of plastic with a road painted along one side. And you could build your 1/64 scale garage HQ that would be along the track. S scale buildings for train sets work well and Ertl made some really nice farm set buildings...or you just make your own.

If you plan on doing some racing at Sussex Raceway, and you'd like to have your own garage, post in this thread. If the idea gets enough support, I'll make it happen!

Thanks Guys!

Chris

Oh wow...I was thinking just print out backgrounds, not actual models, but hey, that'd be sweet!

I might have to roll on over the hobby store and see what they have. Would be fun to weather a model and add a RLD logo to something.

Cool, I'm glad this idea is getting some support.

My track is currently on 3-6' tables, so I have a good 15-16 feet of space down the flat of the track...if I got 8-10 people to make up their own 'trackside garage', I think it would look really cool in the videos!

I'll start thinking a little harder about this...let's build something cool!

I'll come up with a starting point for you, Smitty. I'll paint the 'road' on it beforehand, so it will match up. I'll send them out to the people that want to build them up, and you can send them back whenever they are done. Let me come up with a good source for 12" x 12" squares

Team shots could be taken at your own 'garage' that way too :)

It is an awesome idea and would be cool too see all the custom garages people make. My wife just recently got on board with my hobby and we are in the market for building a diorama

After doing a little looking around, I think foam core board will be the best starting point (it's light weigh and easy to glue stuff down to...and cheap). I can can get poster-sized boards and cut them down, or I might be able to get pre-cut 12 x 12 squares. I think I'll do them in gray, so it looks like the garages are on a concrete base.

I'll try to find a good source for the foam core boards and I'll start getting them out to the people interested, so we might have a few trackside  for the Gasser race in July!

I'm looking forward to seeing where this leads...should be pretty cool!

what about you making a thin plastic sheet that we glue onto our corrigated plastic base, [like politician's signs]... cheaper.. also some RAAB gaurd rails to put between the return lane and the garage doors would rock... 18" x 24" corrigated sheets are a couple bucks at wallies...

maybe we assemble our layouts, ship then to sussex, and have you glue the return lane down on our front lawns...?

  • I'll take a look around Wally World the next time I'm in there! I do have some Jersey barriers...that would be pretty cool :) — 72_Chevy_C10
