Using Fishing Weights

JBlotner42 Monday, 6/15/2026

I don't know why I didn't think of this before. I've been using lead fishing weights in my cars and just figured out that you can smash them flat with a hammer and stack them inside the car. You can also smash them together to make a neat little brick. Why didn't I think of this before.

I'm using a coil of lead that normal people use to cut into fishing weights. You can cut it to any size you want, so often you don't have to remove the interior. I think a lot of people use fishing weights.

I use stick-on tire weights. I got a couple of boxes of 100, and I'm still plowing through them.

  • I've never tried tire weights, they seem like a good choice but you can't fit them into the existing interior. You'd have to remove it most times — ManiacMotorsports
  • Yes, you have to do some cutting of the interior, but each weight is a 1/4oz. Works pretty well, and since it already has a sticky back, you just peel and stick. — SpyDude

I use thin sheets of lead that come in a little roll. You cut it to size and can squeeze it down really small.

You can cut lead with a knife. You can hammer lead into shapes. Lead is poison. Wash your hands. Clean your tools.

ok, I’ve said my piece

  • This is also why I do not use lead in my cars. — SpyDude

Fair enough, and your right! If your going  use lead, it's a must to clean, tools, cars, & hands. Alot of races say no tugston putty so lead is the next thing. What is clean but can be munipulated. I'm open to new weight options, what else can I use. I'm new to the die cast racing so please, I'm all ears. Knowlege is power, and the more I know the better racer I can become.

That what I use those fishing leads. You can cut them bend and put where ever it can go. Can ADD a lot of weight in most casting.
