Whispering Pines Thunderdome

AbbyNormal Monday, 11/25/2024

Things started to gel last week after trying 5 or 6 very different finish lines none of which I liked. The current track is 38ft long with 20ft of orange/3D printed 2-lane track and 18ft of crash racers. It's a series of 8 or 9 degree downhill runs into banked 180 turns with one 270 degree. It's a fast track but the cars need to be stable. If you are interested in sending a test car or two let me know. Just DM me. I'd be happy to run some timed laps and 2 or 4 car races with video. Sweet spot looks to be 45 - 65g - weight low - either 1 to 3g nose heavy or rear heavy.

Whispering Pines is a play on the official name of our sub-division which was built in the mid '60s. And we do live in the pines as many tall trees were left to grow quite tall. Thunderdome? If a car is not ready for this track, it gets spit out.

I love that it's not just a 'back and forth' and that you've got some exciting curves and switchbacks in there.  It's short, but there's pleny of action going on.

  • I agree. — Dutch_Clutch_Racing
  • I hope that comes spring time. I can double the footprint of this track. But until then this track will do and as mentioned it’s pretty fast and twisty. My current entry at jungle Falls posted the fastest time so far on this track. We’ll see how that works out in the jungle. — AbbyNormal

I'd be happy to send you something.    Are you looking for anything in particular?

Dutch

  • Longer wheelbase cars tended to better and keeping the weight fairly low. That caddy sent is flying down this course. — AbbyNormal

Whispering Pines? You should call it Rock and Roll Pines. That race was fast.

The track is great. Those are some high quality pieces. I haven’t dreamt up a specific lay out yet but when the time comes I’ll take pictures.

  • Glad to hear you were happy with the assorted pieces. If you look on eBay or Etsy, you can probably find another of the old school hot wheels 180s for less than 15 bucks. Then you would have all the pieces needed for two identical tracks. — AbbyNormal

I think I can get a modded test car to you. I'll probably use this one, it's not really super fast, but it was just a fun build.

  • I would be happy to do some timing laps and then run some 2 and 4 car races — AbbyNormal
  • Sounds good — ManiacMotorsports
  • Maniac....What does it weigh? I'm going to send a couple also - we can race if I'm in the same weight area. — Dutch_Clutch_Racing
  • @Dutch I don't know. I already packaged it up lol. I'd say 45-50g. — ManiacMotorsports

Well, I just discovered that the end of the video has no audio, which is hilarious. Yeah I was messing around adding those automotive racing sounds and I must've detached the audio at the end of the video. So I'm basically just rattling a can there that has two Ferraris and a van inside of their bathed in paint stripper.

  • I am now deaf, but it's OK, hearing isn't important. The track has a cool layout and is super fast. Have you done any experimenting with different playback speeds? — LobotomyScam
  • That’s on the list along with using a second cam for the finish line. — AbbyNormal

I should have warned those sending test cars that if a cars time is way too slow - then the timing system will display HAHA and if the time is way over then you might get a HEHE. It's a tough system.

I forgot to tell you, I sent the test car out a few days ago
