Why do you Collect Hot Wheels?

Preacher Wednesday, 7/4/2012

Just a curious question,...I know some people are into buying cars to resell or hope that they will make a good investment sometime in the future. And there are others who like me, just like cars, and could careless what the value of the cars are, and just want to race them, and enjoy having them. So with that being said, "Why do you collect cars?"

i don't collect cars... i hoard the ones i use for modd racing

Caught the die cast bug at 5 yrs old. (see first car) post. Love the cars then and they still have that hold on me. They come outta the packaging as soon as I get them home, I know they are worth more in the package but they're harder to play with and park on the shelf. And just try to get a carded car into a Jammer case.

I collect to play. Sure, I have a good chunk of cars that just sit on the shelf and look cool but even those get played with every now and then when kids come over or whatever. I understand how people get into the "gotta collect em all" mindset but I just can't do it...too much trouble and too much expense. And lets just say there's not one car in my collection still on the card. I don't plan on letting any of them go, so why bother protecting them?

And not to piss anyone off or anything but I really don't understand the people that just buy cars to resell them. If you ask me, the minute you start scouting cars in terms of return on investment is the same minute you stop looking at diecast cars as fun and for enjoyment. Don't get me wrong, if someone offered me $20 for a car I had, I'd take it but I just can't buy cars in *hopes* of being able to sell them for profit. I think when you have such a personal attachment to something, it should be VERY hard to let them go, even for a price. Plus I'm just not that big of a collector to invest the time and money needed. Believe me, keeping this site going with the weekly racing and web stuff is exhausting enough...but it's something I really love doing.

I agree with this man. I buy cars to play with them. I've never sold any cars before and some of my cars I simply couldn't part with for cash. I think I only have 1 car that's still in its package. I'd probably sell that one if it ever was worth any kind of money (it won't be).

I do it for the race. But after I started the hunt was just awesome and has become a second hobby itself. Always go to the stores and tell my wife I'm gonna wander over here and see what's here and she rolls her eyes.
Lucky my daughter gets into it with me or the wife may try to put a stop to it. And I can't keep anything in the package. I have tried. And it stares back at me like a little kid with there pouty lip out.

Story Time.
Every summer my fathers side of the family gets together for a week in our mountain cabin. One summer my dad and his brothers started what became a tradition thats going into its 16th year. Each member of the family brings a team of ten cars and we race each day of the week on a different type of race. I was addicted from a young age and i have become obsessed with the competition of hot wheel racing.

You may be interested in some of the races we did, besides the drag racing we made up two VERY unique races.

Dead or Alive, Each car drives down the track and off a ramp, if they end the round on all 4 wheels, they will proceed to the next round. If not they are eliminated. The rounds continue until one winner is left going countless rounds of landing on its wheels.

Demolition Derby, inspired by the redneck sport of crashing cars, this race, the common favorite entails two cars sent racing towards each other and the one that stays on the track the most would move on. Incredibly fun event!

This link will bring you to two of my champions from past years.

My old Baja Beetle has taken a beating after countless times rolling off a ramp and landing on the tile floor. He won twice, not consecutive years, the shape of this beetle makes it easy to roll onto his wheels after landing!

This guy was a champion three years in a row, the ramp style of certain hotwheels has become a huge success in the demo derby as they slip right under other cars and flip them right off the track. One to many times though this guy snapped in half. So exciting, yet sad to see his career end.

It would be interesting if we could try different events besides just speed to see the talents of other hot wheels out there!

I'm been a fan of cars pretty much my whole life. I could never own all the cars I like (although I tried for a while). Turns out I can own all the cars I like, and some I don't like so much...if they're Hot Wheels.
