The fast yet unpopular High Speed Racing Wheels

Car_boi Tuesday, 12/14/2021

I just joined RLD, and when I see the oodles and noodles of information, one thing seems to be that the High Speed Racing Wheel doesn't get much word around here.

The Pros and Cons

The Pros

  • The wheel is very thin, to reduce friction
  • The sidewall is smooth so walls are not a problem
  • Still in production
  • It has the FTE axles (unconfirmed)

The Cons

  • The wheels are currently only available on one casting, the HW Formula Solar
  • Thin wheels might lose grip on open road courses

The designs on the wheels are goofy, sure, but the recent designs have no designs, so your wheels are flat, giving you another outlet for design.

I seriously doubt the formula solar has nickel plated axles. The top drag racers don't use FTE wheels anyway.

  • You might be right, as the Formula solar has the same wheel, but not the same name, as it's name changed to SKDisc, so I'm not sure if it has the FTE axles. — Car_boi
  • There's a list floating around somewhere that has all the hot wheels series that have nickel plated axles. — CrazyEights
  • So what do the top racers use, if I may ask? — Bavarian_Diecast_Racing
  • They use non FTE wheels that are the straightest, quietest, spinninest wheels you ever seen. — CrazyEights
  • Would you like to recommend some of these fastest, spinniest, etc. wheels to a newbie, pleeeze ;-)) — Bavarian_Diecast_Racing

There's all sorts of wheel talk in the Wheels & Axles collection of posts....and one just on FTEs, although it could probably be added to at this point. Share if you know!

It would be interesting to see some sort of data (or even just stories) about the thin wheels on open track vs drag track. The lack of friction is a no-brainer in a straight line but not sure that carries over to wide tracks with curves and turns.

  • Yeah, I'm totally not sure if there are FTE axles on the High Speed Racing Wheel, because literally 1 website says that they have NPA, and the others don't. — Car_boi

I love those 2014 high speed racing wheels cars - so hard to find now though boxed.

Ive only ever managed to hunt down about half of them but they're always one of the first sets I search for
