I get it now, that's a good idea! Just little guide rails that fit inside the orange track's rails. I like. I like a lot. This method also keeps the track foldable. Gonna steal this one!

Thanks TDC, I have been planning the new starting gate, I just havent forked out the time and money yet. I have enough orange track to replace all 4 lanes all the way up though.

JDC, are you nailing the boards right to the track?

Nailed to the black base board, but not the orange track pieces. I laid out a complete length of the Walmart track so I would know where to nail these little guides. If centered between the connectors, they fit perfectly under the orange track rails to keep them in place. Once again, I did use adhesive velcro at the start and also the transition to hold the track and keep it from slipping down, but found that the orange track sits perfectly on the unpainted wooden guides and needs no velcro through the flat.
Check out my video post to see my track in action and a pic of my four lane start gate

Built a prototype start gate for some testing. Gate needs some work, but it has fixed the cars flying off on the outside lanes.

thanks for the advice everyone!

The Walmart tracks are for Trick Tracks. They have low profile edges because
the cars always going that fast from feature to feature.

If you can get to a Toys R Us, you should be able to find longer track sections
which I believe has higher sidewalls. That's what you need for downhill racing.

Yes, TRU is the place to go for orange track sections. High walls and about 14" long. If you don't have a TRU near you, give me a PM and I can try to put together a shopping trip for you

Actually, that's a good question - How many of you have a Toys R Us within driving distance?

Wondering if it's not a bad idea to go buy some TRU track, package it up and sell it on the site in general...?

We used to have a TRU, but it disappeared a few years back. Can't believe they left, and to think of how many Hot Wheels I took out of that store! Guess my patronage was not nearly enough.
