The Crew Chief Challenge race is in the books and was a lot of fun! There were first time winners and creative builds all throughout the field. And, I'd like to do something similar this May...Beater Trucks hauling Fat Fendered Hot Rods!
Rules & Restrictions
- Truck and Rods both 57 grams
- 1.3" high, 3.5 " long, orange track wide
- Two 'teams' allowed per person - Each racer may enter 2 trucks and 2 Rods
- Trucks can be of any era, but need yo be 'well worn or played with'. Cars are to be from 1935 to 1949...the Fat Fender era and can be in any condition...they don't have to be beaters
- FTEs are allowed, but you can run whatever wheels you want
- Must be drilled rivets
- Dry lubes only
- I'm thinking of having a 'Coolest Team' award, as well as a 'Spirit of the Event' award and maybe a 'People's Choice' award...to focus some attention on the builds, as well as how fast they go! I am also going to give an award for the highest placing Rookie!
Prizes

Discussion
this series will be far enough into spring [warm] for me to race in the garage attic...
pencil me in for 2 pair, and somewhere in the middle of the series dates as a host... unless one of the new guys wants to run that heet...
As much I could use this snow plow today, I think this is the next candidate to be a Beater Truck...
It's a little heavy right now, but it has a metal chassis... which will soon be a plastic one!
- save those wheels they are killer on an older hot rod with blackwall fronts... — model40fan
- will do, Smitty! — 72_Chevy_C10
- I need to look out for this truck. Can't pass up a car with my name on it! — redlinederby
I mean, since I'm pretty well snowed in today, it's not like this old Chevy truck has the same wheelbase as a Chrysler 300 fte, or anything...
Oh well, here I go again...off to drill rivets!
It will take a little bit of tinkering (not much, really), and this one will be ready...
The old, metal chassis weighed 32 grams by itself (toys were build a little stronger back in the '70's!)...so, with the 300 frame under it, this truck is only weighing about 32 grams! Going to have to add weight!
Had this on my bench for some time...just needed a ruling on wheels axles. Ready for the track. Still need to decide on a fatty...

There is so much AWESOME in this video, I can't even begin to describe it...
Think of this series as...'the race car and their tow/push vehicle' Super cool stuff in here...there's even your 'Thunderbolt' car, TE!
Just a little inspiration for ya!
- The '56 F100 pushing the 5-window is way too cool! — 72_Chevy_C10
- '65 HEMI UNDER GLASS!! — CrzyTrkrDude
I see a killer red '34 5 window #7 FLY...BY...BY ...
and if you look close you can see HW "sweet 16 II's" cockpit mounted on a purple T bucket rail's body...
hmmm... ever wonder where the HW lab rats get some of their ideas ? ..... thanks C10
That did not look like Linda Vaughn to me???
- You're supposed to be looking at the cars! :) (But, I don't think it was Linda Vaughn!) — 72_Chevy_C10
- some things never go out of fashion...cars, girls, money... — Traction-Event
My current Beater Truck is progressing a little...
I glued in the bed, the windshield and the grill (I had to carefully cut the grill off the chassis). And I just put a plastic block on the bottom bottom of the bed to raise the back of the truck up a little
Just updating this Beater...lead (50 caliber shot hammered flat), JB Welded into the frame...
- is that beast "shaved" to fit orange track — model40fan
- Cool...I'll be working on some Fat Fenders this weekend! — 72_Chevy_C10
- tight fit...pipes had to go... — Traction-Event
- Mean — redlinederby
And, if that doesn't get you thinking, here are a few more pics...

I love the Larry's Towing Chevy and the '41 Willys is a great casting!

The patina on this '56 Ford makes it a very cool Beater Truck and what's not to like about a '40 Ford Coupe!
