credit due... C10 is keeping records for the 2015 all star bash... go RLD Racers go !

  • Yup, I'm planning on running a champions race at the Diecast Jam, it is all comes together! — 72_Chevy_C10

My feelings about allowing any type of car compete is that I think that they should have some type of restrictions...because there are known fast cars. I'd hate to see every race come down to a battle of Cadillac 16's and Black with Flames Camaros.

To me, I like the idea of taking cars that aren't fast, and making them fast. It's not easy to make a Fat Fendered car get down the track quick...or a truck...or a 35 gram, fenderless Hot Rod. But, that's the challenge. Granted, this makes it harder for someone just getting started, but that is how you learn...by building cars!

So, I think that themes of some kind need to be in place...maybe, just rather loose themes (trucks, cars, Muscle Cars, Hot Rods)...and I do agree that weights should be set at 40 (or 42) and 57...anything over that is is getting kinda heavy (in my opinion).

Again, just my 2 cents

  • thanks C10 — model40fan
  • also another good idea it clarifies certain questions about themes but you can also say no johnny lightnings and wheels swap for Cadillac — K_Harvest
  • Why no Johnny Lightnings? If it someone is willing to modify one there should be no issue. Not all Johnny Lightnings are fast you know — KandORacing
  • im saying for certain races where we could use any casting we can say hot wheels only. any other races that dont clarify casting brand then — K_Harvest
  • yeah you can use johnnies. im not saying not to allow them. — K_Harvest
  • OK, thanks — KandORacing

I just had a thought...

What if we set up one designated track at one certain volunteer location with one sole purpose. To race any car sent in for a timed run. We can set the dimensions at ( whatever works out. Maybe 2 sets.... FTE and all others) . as long as the car fits those limits, from any themed race or built just for that track it can be entered.

A totem pole of times can be built like they have on "Top Gear" and we can all see, all year long how we are doing.  That way, there can be an assortment of ANYTHING on the board, from all "rolls" of life!  Stocks, customs, mods, themed, whatever from whoever, whenever we get them done.

This will allow for more build time, and still allow for theme races ( that can still be entered in the Grand Champion race come December.)

We could even set up a handicap system. Over the weight limit? Add a hundredths or tenth of a second.....   Wayyyyy under the limit....  Deduct time....

Anyone want to be " The Stig??" And run every car???

2 Cents....

  • I am the Stig :) — 72_Chevy_C10
  • what's a stig ? — model40fan
  • The Stig is a mystical creature on "Top Gear" who races all the nicest cars on the same course. No one knows who he/she is. — CrzyTrkrDude

I had a thread trying set up a Redline Outlaw...like the show Street Outlaws. Have a top 10 list.

Maybe it's time to re-visit that idea

Okay...I've been thinking about all of this and have decided that I will be hosting monthly mail-ins on my home track. Themes will be broad with very basic limits on weight, wheels, etc. Focus will be on creativity and performance. These tournaments will be viewed as "official" Redline Derby races and will all have prizes provided by me and/or sponsors.

Most of the time these will be custom tournaments but a stock/rip-n-roll every now and then will be fun too. I'd say 90% of the time the racing will be on my track, but I will coordinate with other track hosts to have tournaments on alternate tracks as well. Basically, for those that remember, I'll be running this like the Fantasy League, just as a mail-in.

And my thought is the monthly tournament will happen no matter what. It won't matter if there are 4 cars or 40 cars entered, we'll race and there will be a winner. Thought being, over time this will just be an even people can jump in and out of as they see fit, or when they have time, etc. I will try to keep the dates of tournaments consistent between months but it will vary to fit my home schedule.

Having a constant schedule will allow us to have regular stats, race history and can lead to more "best of" tournaments at some point as well. There is a lot of potential with this structure that I think will help us bring in more people to the hobby while still being a lot of fun for veterans. It will also be easier for promote on the site and elsewhere...it'll be a great entry point for people without having to deep dive into a post for details.

And before anyone asks, the monthly races will be in addition to any tournaments being hosted by others. Individuals can still host and organize tournaments...and those tournaments can be as specific or open as they like, it's entirely up to them. The only thing that will change with them (and all tournaments) is new tools to help organize and communicate, which I'm working on currently.

So when does this all start? Soon. Following the rip-n-roll last month, I have a short list of things to improve on my track but look for a start to this come summer. It'll be a half-year trial, of sorts, and if it all goes as well as I hope, 2016 will be the first full year of monthly tournaments.

Wow!!! you could send in a season's worth of entries at one time.

  • Could but don't expect me to plan that far ahead :) Couple months out at best — redlinederby

Hey chevy c 10 I like the street outlaws idea with the top 10 list like the show. Maybe once redline derby gets his monthly races going, which is another great idea, you can host these events monthly and that will be your bread and butter each month on your home track. Im sure you can figure out a way to coordinate pretty close to how the show works having challenges and all that.

  • Thanks KHarvest, I might do something along those lines...we'll see :) — 72_Chevy_C10

Hey Brian,

If you are going to start a monthly series...in June, maybe(?)...you might want to set a tentative 'theme' for the race, so people can start building their cars.

Maybe a 40 gram 'American Sportscar' race...Corvettes, Cobras and Vipers...any era....any wheels. Just a suggestion. I'm sure that everyone has a Corvette, Viper or Cobra laying around.

Or, whatever theme you'd like.

June will be here pretty quick!

Brian,   just spitballin'.... but here goes !

Most of us have drilled an FTE donar's rivets, popped off the axles, only to find the axles don't fit our base...

How about forming a RLD directory of the "track", width, the distance between the inside of the FTE wheels by casting. To let the rookies / all of us, use it as a buyer's guide to help us buy the width axles needed to fit the base we want...

Maybe have the veteran modders who drill a lot of castings pm you the measurements, gradually compile a list of which donar castings give what width axles / wheels... widest = A, next widest = B... and so on... need an axle ?  check the list of donar FTE axle widths on the RLD directory before "bidding"...

  • Great idea Smitty! — KandORacing
  • just knowing what cars accept what donors would be cool — 72_Chevy_C10
  • dodge viper FTEs = '55 bel-air gasser's 5 spokes... — model40fan
  • '69 GTO fte's = '68 Copo Camaro and '69 Camaro — 72_Chevy_C10
