Die Cast versus Slot Cars

Slot Cars; Hmmm?

Stroller--You need to check out the new slot car tracks, which are typically 1/32 and 1/24 size cars! They can now be purchased as a digital set. That means you can pass on the slot car tracks, both on straights and corners, assuming you have the correct pieces. You can control the speed and breaking abilities of each car (good for kids), you can set up fuel capacities which means you have to take pit stops on a real pit lane, you can run up to eight cars at once on a two lane track, the cars can even be run by the computer system, you can hook the sets into PCs to have a race management software which shows all kinds of information about the races.

What you can do with the setups on the cars is quite amazing.

I bought and have a huge setup in my basement and there are so many things I want to do to it, but it is $$$ and I usually end up spending my "play" money on the Hot Wheels instead.

Yeah I would never want to turn anything into slot cars vs hot wheels. Its apples and oranges, and I'm certainly not giving up my slots.

Even HO scale, which is my scale of choice, has lots to offer. My buddies and I have a good time with it and its a tinkerers dream come true. As someone upthread commented, it still takes a lot of R&D to get it right, especially in slot racing, but tuning a car just so an then having it go ripping around the track faster than it did before is very satisfying. The downside is, its quite a lot more of an investment. (although I've seen some pretty massive collections of HW too) And you also can't just walk into Walmart or Canadian Tire and pick up slot stuff.

Anyway, as I tell people who get too serious about their slots, and I'll say it here too...Its all just toy cars and its all good.

I actually had this wild idea. (unfortunately I have too many of those sometimes) of turning my slot setup into a Hot Wheels tribute, going so far as to even paint my track orange and cobble together some wooden pit buildings that look like those old supercharger garages.

Anyway, here's one of my favorite vids of grown men having a blast with a really simple HO slot track.

pretty cool, like the older bodies, local slotter has us save the plastic H.W. bodies when we get them. except for the '57s, they go to carl !

Yeah I do a little vac forming. Problem with HW bodies is that the wheelbase is typically too long for a slot chassis, unless you get lucky. You have to modify the wheelwells and a lot of the time they just look silly.

Just noticed your avatar model40fan... small pic but it looks like a red Street Creeper in the foreground. I was looking around the net and stumbled across the red Street Creeper and the guy wanted 20 bucks for it. Its a cool model, though I try to avoid coveting things, and no way I was gonna spend that anyway.

Then I came across one hanging on the very back of a $1 peg in Toys r Us. My lucky day.
