Frames per second for your timeline

Chaos_Canyon Friday, 9/3/2021

Since I started, I have filmed my races at 120fps but I have generally had my timeline set to 24FPS, as this is what I have always done. I've never had a problem with the way it looks, but thought I would try one of my videos in a 60FPS timeline and see what difference it makes. So the camera's and their settings, the lights and everything else is exactly the same as all my previous setups, it is only the timeline in my editor that was changed.

Looking at the two videos below, can you tell the difference?

Do you think the first or the second one looks better/different?

I think the first one runs smoother

You can definitely see the 60fps difference in the top video. And while the other one is certainly not as smooth, the 60fps might be too smooth. Not unlike video games running at 60fps, it just feels weird in some ways, like almost hurts my head type of way.

But it's interesting seeing them side-by-side like that to see how big a difference it is...but I guess adding 36 frames is a lot :) I've never paid attention to my editing to see about adjust the fps of the timeline, I just went with the default. I'm shooting at 60fps on my iPhone so I might do some experimenting myself.

  • I know what you mean. To me 24fps is more what you see in everyday tv, ads etc. The 60fps is super smooth. Maybe I'll try 48fps as a mid point. :) — Chaos_Canyon
