How Do You Arrange Your Cars?

Preacher Wednesday, 7/17/2013

I have an assortment of boxes for my cars...mainly clear plastic boxes that will hold 24 cars from Walmart, to Hot Wheels 48 car blue carrying case, and a few 100 car boxes. But I would like to sort my cars according to the manufactures. But my problem is what do you do when you buy another car...resort all your cars to make it fit...or just leave some spaces open between each car type? Just curious at what others are doing to sort their cars.

Sort? You mean you can sort them?.......Just kidding. I have a rack that has 10 different colored drawers. They are labeled Ford, GM, Mopar, Fantasy and Foreign. 2 Ford, 1 Gm, 2 Mopar, 3 Fantasy and 2 Foreign. Within each drawer they are alphabetical by model. At least that's the way it's supposed to be but my friends come over want to race. I do test racing. The neighbor kids drop by. and my sorting seems to be a far distant dream. Today I went out and counted all my loose vehicles not counting non 1/64 scale vehicles or heavy equipment, airplanes, boats and scifi vehicles. I have 806 loose vehicles, many in their appropriate drawers but most are lined up along side my track or in the house. I found half a dozen in my car that I had forgot to bring in. I get cars from thrift shops, antique shops,(surprisingly cheap there) garage sales and gifts from friends and family. Now most are sorted using the random chaos universe theory......

I have adopted that theory as my own

Funny though....I've not had any luck with antique dealers. I made a trip out of town because an antique dealer announced he had thousands. It was more like 100, basic mainlines and he wanted 5 bucks per. I walked out empty handed on that trip.

Got any pictures of your drawer setup to give me a better idea?

not a collector just a butcher, don't open them till I am ready to cut them up [saves the wheels]... but I have [4] red plastic 1 liter coke bottle cases... 15 peanut jars in each case...the jars are identified by the car's parts within...
[25] flat rate boxes with potential rods... and donars, [wheels, bases and engines] take up 1/2 the laundry room !
room is a mess - no pix !

Since I'm doing all the Fantasy League racing, I have my cars in Jammer cases organized by class...so like American, Fantasy, International, FTE, etc. Within those I will group branded cars (Corvettes together, Mustangs, etc) and that's pretty much it. I need to find my cars frequently and quickly so grouping is essential.

For cars I'm not racing, I have them kind of everywhere. Some are on a shelf on the wall, some in cases in storage and many just all over the house on tables, chairs, floor. My kid is 1.5 years old now so she loves carrying them around, throwing them and even lining them up so organization goes out the window with them.

The cars I race are the ones that need to stay safe and organized, everything else is wild west.

As a side note, I always thought it would be neat to have cars stored in a tool chest with those skinny drawers. Just have one chest in the race room with all my cars in. Maybe save space a bit and keep things organized and protected.

I have over 150 Jammers. I have at least one Jammer for each letter of the alphabet, A-Z, for fantasy models. I have at least 4 Jammers for S alone! There's a lot of fantasy models that start with an S!

For realistic models, I have them separated by manufacturer. (Ford, Chevy, etc)

My other brands of diecast are just lumped by brand and are not categorized.

THe cars I have that are actually arranged are by weight and fastest cars sorted in Jammers.

I got back into racing Hot Wheels in 2011. So far I have two HW 48 cases and my race box for the new ones.

Havent pulled out my red lines from my childhood yet. Most of them are in their fast to slowest order from the last race match they ran! I know there are some MB in there and a few Corgi's as well.

Since I have the super 6 lane as my current short track set up, I created a race box out of two shirt boxes. One holds the cut up ends of the other - so it is essentially 4 -6 layers thick of card stock for the bottom, in four rows of 6 cars each. The box ends created the dividers and I made inserts to create two layers - making another table top 48 case with easy access! Those are all ranked fastest to slowest.

I also have a collection of loose Corvettes on a wooden shelf in the home office sorted by MY and wall display of unopened Vettes that mostly are in as purchased or received order.
