Newbie needs advice

BamaExile Wednesday, 2/13/2013

Hi, guys! I recently purchased an older NIB Hot Wheels drag race track, at the time I had no idea racing die cast cars was a phenomenon of sorts. I just bought the track to have some fun with my son and his cars. Anyway, I was disappointed to find that the starting gate for the track is less than satisfactory and would like some advice on building a starting gate or purchasing one. I may go ahead a get one of the Dragtracks sets, but at the moment, I'd just like to find a solution to my current set. I'm thinking about epoxying a spring under each starting button, which will lift both gates to their maximum height.

Glad I found you guys. This is a pretty cool forum you have here!

BamaExile, Welcome to the mAdNeSs we call Redlinederby!

A lot of us here built our track using the blog as a guide.
Here's the link: http://www.redlinederby.com/blog/build-your-own-redline-derby-race-track/
The blog (look at the upper right of this screen) has a lot of useful information.

I built my own starting gate using wood, lexan and a piano hinge. I'll post pics asap (Webshots closed and the pics are on a different computer).

Welcome, Bama!

You'll find a lot of discussion here about finish and start lines...however the finish line seems to be the thing most people seek. Here's a few threads about those:

As far as starting gates, check out the Show Off Your Track thread for some quick snapshots of various starting lines. Most of them are flip-up style which usually does the trick and is pretty easy to build. For my track, I made a lever that lifts up. Dead simple to make with some left over wood and a few screws.

As mentioned above check the Redline Derby blog first it should be a bit more organized. Then you should sort thru the forums there's tons of info...ask questions as you go. There's tons of friendly folks here more than willing to help.

I found this link. It the track set up I put together after finding Redline Derby a while back. There's a lot of nicer tracks out there, but maYBE some helpful tips here.

just my opinion but t i think that some soft foam may be easier to use to keep the starting pins up...
