Optimal lane width?

Anyone got any ideas about what the optimal lane width would be for a HW ramp? I've eyeballed it, and I'm thinking 1.5 inch should do. There's wiggle room....but its not terrible. (My plan is to build without the need to lay orange track down.)
I thought I read somewhere that HW orange track was 1 and 5/16 inches between the uprights....but that seems a little narrow to me. Is that correct? (none of the stores around here have loose track for me to measure)

The track surface width of standard HW track is 1 9/32"/33mm. The track width of some other brands(Expert Drag Tracks, Blue Track) is a little wider, but I don't know the exact specs. A problem you may encounter with w-i-d-e-r tracks is that unbalanced/'poor tracking' cars will typically run slower on them.
