Photo-Finish? Maybe

Stroller Tuesday, 3/12/2013

Hmmmm....heres an idea. I got a little Kodak video camera for my birthday that allows you to view one frame at a time. So I thought of filming my cars in action and view the video results of the half way close races. Does this seem feasible?

I didn't know that. Well I guess I'm not original....Does it work well?

Yeah, I make videos of the races and if I can't tell what the result is, I play the video back on the camera. Sometimes they're so close that I have to do the frame by frame thing like you said. Works great!

While slowing down the video to a single frame can help you see narrow finishes (which is what I do as well), how well that works really boils down to how many frames-per-second your camera shoots. I'm not sure what the standard is - probably 24 or 30 FPS - which can show you a lot but it often gets blurry. If you want to get all Mythbuster slowmo on things, you'll need a camera that can shoot 100s of frames per second or more so each frame is clear.

Believe, I've thought about getting a higher FPS camera for racing but it's just way out of my budget, they run hundreds of dollars and I just can't justify that...but it would be awesome. I should see if someone is selling one second hand...hmmm...

Also depends on how fast the cars are going! My track is slow compared to yours and some others so a regular camera seems to work just fine!

I think its just a matter of time until a pro-grade 'photo-finish gate' is devised for 1/64th scale racing. IIRC, greyhound & horse racing photo gates use a dream...can't I?
